Sixers coach Doc Rivers a candidate to be named Team USA head coach
Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers has a lot on his plate in terms of preparing for the 2021-22 season where he hopes to guide the Sixers to a much-coveted NBA championship.
Now, he is a candidate to lead another basketball team while also focusing on his own.
After Team USA won another gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in August, coach Gregg Popovich is going to step down from the position after five years at the helm. As Grant Hill takes over as the new managing director for the organization, he is lining up potential candidates to replace Popovich.
Per Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated, Rivers is one of those candidates:
A source told The Undefeated a current NBA coach with previous USA Basketball experience would likely be hired as the next coach of the team. Other possible candidates with USA Basketball coaching experience include the Philadelphia 76ers’ Doc Rivers, Atlanta Hawks’ Nate McMillan, Phoenix Suns’ Monty Williams, New York Knicks’ Tom Thibodeau and Miami Heat’s Erik Spoelstra. Another potential candidate is former NBA coach Jeff Van Gundy, who has coached USA Basketball in qualifying play in recent years.
Rivers is a coach with a ton of experience at the NBA level and he will now look to bring that to Team USA should he be hired. The men’s basketball team has won a gold medal in the Olympics the previous four times so it is a tradition of excellence that is looking to be continued.
