Share your Athlete of the Week vote for events ending Jan. 27

Despite an abbreviated week of competition because of exams, there were some notable performances among Section 4 athletes last week.

Four of those athletes have been selected as nominees for Athlete of the Week.

Voting will be open until the end of the day Wednesday to decide the winner from the coverage areas of the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin, Elmira Star-Gazette, Ithaca Journal and Corning Leader.

Nominees are based primarily on results reported to bgmsports@gannett.com or events covered by sports reporters from the publications.

A winner will be announced Friday.

This week's nominees, based on events of Jan. 22-27:

Caden Bellis, Tioga Central wrestling: He won all four of his matches by pin to help the Tigers capture the Division II title for the third year in a row at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Wrestling Dual Meet Championships. Total mat time for Bellis in the four pins was 4 minutes, 52 seconds.

Makana "Cha" Gardner, Newark Valley girls basketball: She had 32 points, eight rebounds and seven blocked shots to lead Newark Valley to a 52-23 victory over Watkins Glen in a meeting of the top two teams in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference South Large School Division.

Nolyn Proudfoot, Corning boys basketball: He connected for 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out three assists and had two steals before sitting out the fourth quarter with the lead well in hand in the Hawks' 75-53 victory over Ithaca. Corning's scoring advantage with Proudfoot on the court was plus-34.

Nicola Soper, Candor girls basketball: She grabbed a school-record 35 rebounds and scored 10 points to help the Coyotes to a 44-39 victory over Newfield.
