Edison basketball star Payton Littlefield voted Athlete of Week for events ending Jan. 6
Thomas A. Edison girls basketball standout Payton Littlefield has been voted Athlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 6.
Littlefield, a returning all-state player and 1,000-point career scorer, nailed seven 3-pointers and scored 33 points, all in the first three quarters, to spearhead the Elmira Heights school's 66-24 victory over Dryden last week.
She received Athlete of the Week honors through online voting. Littlefield, a senior, was one of six nominees chosen by the sports staffs of the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin, Elmira Star-Gazette, Corning Leader and Ithaca Journal.
The other nominees were Delhi boys basketball player Ivan Richardson, Chenango Valley swimmer Amir Sadykov, Tioga Central boys basketball player Evan Sickler, Candor girls basketball player Nicola Soper and Waverly boys basketball player Joey Tomasso.
Voting was close. Littlefield received nearly 53% of the votes cast and Sadykov garnered just over 40% of the vote.
