Shania Twain says posing topless at age 57 'changed everything' about her body insecurity

Shania Twain is opening up about her reasons for posing topless.

In an interview with Extra published Friday, the singer, 57, got candid about feeling insecure about her body growing up and how her risqué cover for her 2022 single "Waking Up Dreaming" was a step to heal that.

"I’ve been very shy about my body from a very young age. I would not go to the beach in a bathing suit," Twain said, adding she was "really tortured by (body insecurity) from the age of 10."

As an adult, Twain said she started taking steps to embrace her body, like appearing braless in a dress in the music video for her 1997 hit song "You're Still The One." Twain was in her early 30s at the time.

Twain described this wardrobe choice as "making decisions that give me this freedom to do things I wouldn’t normally do in my daily life."

"It was really a genuine feeling of 'Man! I Feel Like a Woman!' " she added.

Nudity, however, is "a whole other thing," Twain said. At 57, Twain chose to appear topless for the cover of her 2022 single "Waking Up Dreaming."

The decision, she said, was meant to help her access her own confidence and to help others access theirs: "For me it meant, 'Can I look at myself in the mirror with the lights on?' "

"I do this naked photo shoot, and it changed everything for me," Twain continued. "I want to be able to stand and go, ‘Yes, I am a woman that is comfortable in her own skin.' It’s not like I’m trying to show my nakedness to the world. I’m trying to show that confidence in your own nakedness is necessary."

Twain is set to embark on tour in Spring 2023.
