See Tulare County's top winter sports performers for Week’s 6-9

The Times-Delta/Advance-Register will recognize Tulare County's top high school sports performers on a weekly basis this school year.

Coaches, please submit your results/top performers after each game, match or meet to sports reporter Vongni Yang at vyang2@gannett.com to have players highlighted.

This story will be updated throughout the week with that information.

Jan. 11

Boys basketball

Jagar Brooks, Golden West: Brooks scored 15 points to anchor the Trailblazers to a 56-54 win over Mt. Whitney in an East Yosemite League game. Golden West led 29-19 at halftime.

Vince Aceves, Golden West: Aceves finished with 11 points.

Juan Cortes, Golden West: Cortes had 10 points.

Jayden Najera, Golden West: Najera added six points.

Evan Renteria, Golden West: Renteria also had six points.

Israel Briggs, Mt. Whitney: Briggs dropped a game-high 27 points.

John Applewhite, Mt. Whitney: Applewhite chipped in eight points.

Matt Townsend, Mt. Whitney: Townsend had seven points.

Cole Gilcrest: Redwood: Gilcrest racked a up team-high 17 points as the Rangers knocked off Porterville 50-46 in an EYL contest. Redwood has won back-to-back league games. Eleven of his 17 points came in the first half.

Zander Jensen, Redwood: Jensen contributed 16 points.

Omar Ramirez, Porterville: Ramirez had 12 points.

Brayden Della, Porterville: Della added 10 points.

Jan. 10

Girls basketball

Jocelynn Melendez, Tulare Union: Melendez finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals as the Tribe defeated Lemoore 47-42 in a West Yosemite League match.

Kailee Gilbert, Tulare Union: Gilbert added nine points, eight rebounds and six steals.

Mason Hatton, Tulare Union: Hatton had seven points, four blocks and three steals.

Boys basketball

Malachi Ficher, Tulare Western: Ficher scored 24 points to lead the Mustangs to a 71-56 victory over Mission Oak. Tulare Western led 35-24 at halftime and cruised to a win with a 36-point outburst in the second half.

Kaine Garcia, Tulare Western: Garcia dropped 22 points.

Jaydon Henningham, Tulare Western: Henningham sank 11 points.

Cameron Azevedo, Mission Oak: Azevedo drilled 15 points.

Malakai Rodriguez, Mission Oak: Rodriguez had 12 points.

Boys basketball

Israel Briggs, Mt. Whitney: Briggs registered a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Pioneers to a 46-44 East Yosemite League win over Porterville. Mt. Whitney sealed its first league win of the season with a 15-10 run in the fourth quarter.

John Applewhite, Mt. Whitney: Applewhite tossed in 10 points.

Adrian Huerta, Mt. Whitney: Huerta added five points.

Xavier Soto, Mt. Whitney: Soto also had five points.

Brayden Della, Porterville: Della scored a game-high 27 points.

Camden Haynes, Porterville: Haynes chipped in five points.

Aryel Chavez, Redwood: The senior captain compiled 17 points, four rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal in a 74-48 loss to El Diamante in both team's EYL opener.

Jordan Powell, Redwood: The freshman delivered 11 points with nine rebounds, four steals and three blocks.

Kamryn Westra, Central Valley Christian: Westra racked up18 points, eight rebounds, four deflections, four steals and three assists in a loss to Selma.

Boys basketball

Israel Briggs, Mt. Whitney: Briggs posted another double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds as the Pioneers routed Yosemite 58-29 at the Reedley Tournament.

Josiah Simmons, Mt. Whitney: Simmons had three points and 10 boards.

Adrian Huerta, Mt. Whitney: Huerta added nine points.

John Applewhite, Mt. Whitney: Applewhite had seven points.

Xavier Soto, Mt. Whitney: Soto dropped eight points.

Israel Briggs, Mt. Whitney: Briggs netted 23 points with five rebounds to spark the Pioneers to a 63-30 win over Avenal at the Reedley Tournament. Mt. Whitney entered halftime with a 36-11 lead.

Adrian Huerta, Mt. Whitney: Huerta had 10 points and six rebounds.

Josiah Simmons, Mt. Whitney: Simmons delivered six points, two rebounds and eight assists.

Chase Kottage, Mt. Whitney: Cottage had seven points.

Boys wrestling

Izaak Mendoza, Redwood: Mendoza won an individual championship at 132 pounds at the 62nd Redwood Invitational.

Adrian DeLeon, Redwood: DeLeon was the 62nd Redwood Invitational individual champion at 157 pounds.

Enrique Segura, Redwood: Seguara won first place at 190 pounds at the 62nd Redwood Invitational.

Kai Preisendorf, Redwood: Preisendorf brought home a first-place medal at 215 pounds at the 62nd Redwood Invitational.

Zachary Klarcyk, Porterville: Klarcyk captured the individual tournament crown at 113 pounds at the 62nd Redwood Invitational.

Nicholas Quintana, Dinuba: Quintana finished first at 120 pounds at the 62nd Redwood Invitational.

Blake Trelles, El Diamante: Trelles was the 62nd Redwood Invitational individual champion at 126 pounds.

Josiah Simmons, Mt. Whitney: Simmons finished with nine points and four rebounds.

John Applewhite, Mt. Whitney: Applewhite contributed five points and five boards.

Boys basketball

Israel Briggs, Mt. Whitney: Briggs registered a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to direct the Pioneers to a 61-40 win at the Reedley Tournament. The Pioneers led 24-17 at halftime and closed the game in the second half with a 37-23 run.

Adrian Huerta, Mt. Whitney: Huerta dropped 12 points with five rebounds.

Matt Townsend, Mt. Whitney: Townsend had six points and six boards.

Xavier Soto: Soto added 10 points.

Girls basketball

Kamryn Westra, CVC: Westra had a double-double with 14 points, 20 rebounds, three deflections, two steals and a block in a 39-36 win against Golden West.

Girls basketball

Sydney Calderon, Redwood: Calderon recorded 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and seven steals to help the Rangers beat Tulare Western 47-28.

Brooklyn Tayo, Redwood: Tayo added 10 points, two rebounds, an assist and four steals.

Ariel Chavez, Redwood: Chavez had eight points, seven rebounds, two assists, a steal and two pass deflections.

Janessa Garza, Farmersville: Garza joined the 1,000-point club after a 10-point performance against Corcoran. The junior now has 1,022 career points.

Kamryn Westra, CVC: Westra turned in a double-double with 13 points, 14 rebounds, four steals and three deflections in a defeat to Tulare Western.

Girls basketball

Jordan Powell, Redwood: Powell tallied 14 points, eight rebounds, three steals and a pass deflection in the Rangers' 54-10 rout over Orange Cove at the Dinuba Tournament.

Brooklyn Tayo, Redwood: Tayo chipped in 13 points, three rebounds, two assists, five steals and three pass deflections.

Angie Miranda, Redwood: Miranda had nine points, nine rebounds, an assist, a block, four steals and two pass deflections.

Girls basketball

Jazmaine Stewart, Farmersville: Stewart, a sophomore, led the Aztecs with 23 points, seven rebounds and nine steals in their 53-31 win over Central Valley Christian.

Janessa Garza, Farmersville: Garza added 15 points.

Boys basketball

Blaine McFall, Exeter: McFall set a single-game, school-record 12 blocks and added 12 points and 10 rebounds in a 60-37 win over Lindsay.

Dec. 16

Girls basketball

Janessa Garza, Farmersville: Garza completed a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds in a 68-33 win over Exeter to lead the Aztecs to the championship at the Orange Belt Classic tournament. Farmersville went a perfect 4-0. Garza was selected as the tournament's most valuable player.

Jazmaine Stewart, Farmersville: Stewart contributed 16 points and nine rebounds.

Haylie Tassey, Farmersville: Tassey scored 13 points with eight rebounds.

Dec. 15

Girls basketball

Estrella Valencia, Farmersville: Valencia pulled through with a double-double, notching 18 points and 10 steals in a 49-30 victory over Parlier at the Orange Belt Classic. Valencia was selected to the all-tournament team.

Janessa Garza, Farmersville: Garza also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 steals.

Dec. 14

Girls basketball

Jazmaine Stewart, Farmersville: Stewart erupted for 30 points and eight rebounds as the Aztecs routed Kings Christian 66-17 at the Orange Belt Classic.

Janessa Garza, Farmersville: Garza had 16 points and six rebounds.
