Section V boys lacrosse: Pal-Mac duels HFL, Aquinas meets Penn Yan for small school titles

Section V's two small school boys lacrosse champions will be decided this weekend, as Finger Lakes Community College hosts the Class C and D title games. The winner of each game will advance to the NYSPHSAA sub-regionals, to be played next week.

This season's crop of finalists features some familiar foes. Aquinas, Honeoye Falls-Lima, Palmyra-Macedon and Penn Yan are the contenders, three of which are finalists from last spring.

Here's the matchups:

Section V Class C championship: No. 1 Palmyra-Macedon (17-0) vs. No. 2 Honeoye Falls-Lima (16-2)

When: 11 a.m. Saturday, May 25 at Finger Lakes Community College.

Pal-Mac's key players: Freshman attack Jackson Dennie, freshman attack Reid Diehl, senior defender Luke Herendeen, senior attack Keagan Hoesterey, senior goalie Peyton Lich, junior midfielder Luke VanGorden.

HFL's key players: Senior midfielder Drew Angelo, senior defender Ben Cook, senior midfielder Patrick Donahoe, junior attack/midfielder Quinn Kailbourne, senior attack Chase Perryman, senior midfielder Owen Smith.

Nuts and bolts: Pal-Mac entered this week as one of five teams in New York state that maintain an undefeated record ... HFL is the only Monroe County league team that competes in Section V's Class C or D divisions ... No player has been more prolific than Pal-Mac senior Keagan Hoesterey. His 127 points lead Section V ... HFL is one of two teams in Section V to boast multiple players in the top 10 in goals scored: Grady Goodberlet and Chase Perryman.

Section V Class D championship: No. 1 Aquinas (13-5) vs. No. 2 Penn Yan (12-5)

Aquinas' key players: Senior defender Pete Agnello, sophomore attack Tano Auriuso, senior midfielder TJ Geyer, junior goalie Jake Gibson, sophomore attack Jake Guggino, junior attack Noah Olbrich, senior defender Jack Schimmel, senior midfielder Carter Wegman, senior midfielder Jaiden White, sophomore defender Caleb Wood.

Penn Yan's key players: Sophomore midfielder Braden Fingar, junior midfielder Teagan Fingar, sophomore attack Tukker Fisher, freshman goalie Jaxon Jensen, senior midfielder Bryant VanHousen.

Nuts and bolts: This is the second consecutive year that Aquinas and Penn Yan face off for the Class D section championship. The Mustangs won last year's game 11-6 ... Penn Yan head coach Brian Hobart joined the 300-win club on April 18 with a win over Newark. According to blaxfive.net, he's the third Section V coach to reach the milestone after Fairport's Randy Garrett and Canandaigua's John Johnson ... Aquinas' Tano Auriuso (104) and Noah Olbrich (82) both enter the title game ranked in the top 10 in points recorded ... Penn Yan's 25 championships are the most in Section V history ... Aquinas is 1-5 all time in section championship games, the lone win claimed in 2010.
