Section 9 roundup: Lourdes, Red Hook earn lacrosse showdown, other locals advance to final

Drew Cornax scored twice, including the winning goal a minute into overtime, lifting Our Lady of Lourdes to a dramatic 11-10 win over Rondout Valley on Wednesday in a Section 9 Class C boys lacrosse semifinal.

The second-seeded Warriors advance to face Red Hook in the final Saturday, 10 a.m. at Middletown High School.

Matthew Krauza had two assists and his third goal tied the score, forcing overtime. Alex Crysler and Nick Miano each added three goals, and Atticus Eglinski made 12 saves for Lourdes (10-5). Ethen Bowman scored four goals for No. 3 Rondout.

The Warriors, in their first season in Section 9, are enjoying a breakout season and have won eight of their last nine games.

Red Hook 10, Goshen 8 ― Brady Kelly had four goals and three assists to lead top-seeded Red Hook over No. 4 Goshen in a Section 9 Class C semifinal. Mikey Mrzyglod scored four goals, and Gabe Gravino added two goals and an assist for the Raiders (14-2).

Softball

Leah Gunsett pitched a six-inning complete game, allowing one hit with 11 strikeouts and she homered, leading top-seeded Marlboro in a 12-0 win over No. 5 Highland in a Section 9 Class B semifinal.

The defending champions face third-seeded Ellenville in the final on Friday, 6 p.m. at Middletown High School.

Gunsett gave up only a first-inning single, then retired the final 16 batters she faced, notching her 200th career strikeout in the process. Senior Ella Leduc was 2 for 4, including her 100th hit.

Emily Tarsio went 4 for 4 with a homer, a double and five RBI for the Iron Dukes. Kalista Birkenstock was 4 for 5 with a double, two runs, two RBI and a stolen base, and Taylor Castelli went 2 for 4 with a double and two runs. Kaitlyn Gordon tripled and walked twice.

Pine Plains 7, Sullivan West 0 ― Lindsay Farinaccio allowed two hits and struck out nine in a complete game to lead the top-seeded Bombers over No. 4 Sullivan West in a Section 9 Class C semifinal. Farinaccio also went 2 for 3 with three RBI.

Pine Plains faces No. 2 S.S. Seward in the final Friday, 4 p.m. at Middletown High School. Seward upset the Bombers in the final last season, but Pine Plains now has a chance to win a sixth title in seven years.

Lily Fanea was 2 for 4 with three RBI and Abbey Mayes went 2 for 4.

Baseball

Dylan Boenig went 2 for 3 with a double and drove in two runs for Spackenkill, which pulled out in a 3-1 over second-seeded Highland in 10 innings Wednesday in a Section 9 Class B semifinal.

The defending state champions will face No. 1 Chester in the final Saturday, 10 a.m. at Cantine Field in Saugerties.

Bryan Hoyt was 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run for the Spartans. Linus Oudom allowed five hits and a run and struck out 11 in seven innings. Andrew Speranza earned the win in relief, pitching three hitless innings with four strikeouts.

Pine Plains 10, Millbrook 0 ― Aidan Damon went 2 for 3 with two RBI, including the 10th run that triggered the mercy rule in the fifth inning against No. 4 Millbrook in a Section 9 Class C semifinal. He also pitched a one-hitter. Rich Starzyk homered and drove in three, Peyton Zeko was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, and Sid Stracher drove in a run.

The top-seeded Bombers will face Burke or S.S. Seward in the final Saturday, 2 p.m. at Lorenz Field in Saugerties.

Wallkill 17, Beacon 2 ― Kyle DeGroat homered and drove in three to lead No. 1 Wallkill over fifth-seeded Beacon in a Section 9 Class A semifinal. The Panthers will face No. 2 Cornwall in the final Saturday, 1 p.m. at Cantine Field. Beacon finishes the season at 15-7.
