Section 9 has handful of favorites at state track and field championships

Section 9 track and field athletes have earned 13 No. 1 seeds in their respective events and divisions for the New York State Federation championships this weekend.

The track meet will be held Friday and Saturday at Faller Field on the campus of Middletown High School.

Athletes hail from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, New York City's Public Schools Athletic League, the Catholic High School Athletic Association and the Association of Independent Schools.

Competition is split between large schools (Div. I) and small schools (Div. II). The two classes mix for events held with single heats - 800, 1,500/1,600 and 3,000/3,200 meter runs, 3,200 relays, steeplechase, pentathlon, high jump and pole vault - and the medals will be doled out based on class.

Medals for the Federation will be handed out, and separate public-school medals will be doled out after the athletes from PSAL, CHSAA and AIS are removed.
