Section 4 football finals are on: Have a look at the matchups and particulars
State-playoff berths are for the taking this weekend across three venues for Section 4 football finalists.
Ten teams throughout five enrollment classifications will target starts in state quarterfinals next weekend at Vestal’s Dick Hoover Stadium.
Here’s what’s up:
Class AA
Matchup: Elmira (4-5) at Corning (4-4).
When: 6 p.m. Nov. 10.
Next for winner: Syracuse CBA/Cicero-North Syracuse winner, 6 p.m. Nov. 18 at Vestal.
Regular-season meeting: Corning, 31-8 (Oct. 20).
State rankings: Unranked.
State playoff appearances: Elmira four; Corning five.
Etc.: Elmira coach Jimmy McCauley on Corning: “Corning is as advertised. You know what they’re going to do. I think their skill guys are very skilled, I think their fullback and wings can score any play inside and outside, quarterback can throw it a little bit. … I really, really think it’s going to come down to can you tackle four quarters? Can you limit those big plays?”
Class A
Matchup: Horseheads (7-3) at Vestal (7-1).
When: 7 p.m. Nov. 10.
Next for winner: East Syracuse-Minoa/Whitesboro winner, 8 p.m. Nov. 17 at Vestal.
Regular-season meeting: Vestal, 28-7 (Oct. 20).
State rankings: Horseheads No. 28; Vestal No. 16.
State playoff appearances: Horseheads four; Vestal four.
Etc.: Horseheads coach Kevin Hillman on Vestal: “That’s a great team. We had a tough time with them last time up there. They’re another real physical team and if we don’t match them it makes for a tough game. So we’ve got to come back, regroup and just do the same thing we did (against Union-Endicott in semi).”
Class B
Matchup: Owego (5-4) vs. Maine-Endwell (9-0).
When: 3 p.m. Nov. 11 at Vestal.
Next for winner: Indian River/New Hartford winner, 3 p.m. Nov. 18 at Vestal.
Regular-season meeting: M-E, 69-0 (Sept. 16).
State rankings: Maine-Endwell No. 1.
State playoff appearances: Owego none; Maine-Endwell 10.
Etc.: Maine-Endwell has won 31 consecutive games since an 8-0 loss to Union-Endicott in Week 4 of 2021. … The Spartans have averaged 50 points per game.

Matchup: Chenango Forks (6-3) vs. Waverly (9-1).
When: Noon Nov. 11 at Vestal.
Next for winner: Adirondack/General Brown winner, noon Nov. 18 at Vestal.
Regular-season meeting: Waverly, 19-15 (Sept. 29).
State rankings: Chenango Forks No. 15; Waverly No. 4.
State playoff appearances: Forks 19; Waverly four.
Etc.: Waverly has not allowed more than 12 points since that regular-season game against Forks in Week 5 … The Blue Devils have given up 12 points in their most recent three games.

Matchup: Delhi (9-1) vs. Tioga (10-0).
When: 5 p.m. Nov. 10 at Johnson City.

State rankings: Delhi No. 4; Tioga No. 1.
State playoff appearances: Delhi four; Tioga 10.
Etc.: Tioga’s two-time defending state champions seek a sixth consecutive Section 4 championship … Delhi is after its first state-playoff appearance since 2006.
Eight-player
Matchup: Trumansburg (8-1) vs. Moravia (10-0).
When: 6 p.m. Nov. 11 at Vestal.
Next for winner: Pawling/Sullivan West winner, 6 p.m. at Windsor.
Regular-season meeting: Moravia, 56-29 (Sept. 30).
State rankings: Trumansburg No. 6; Moravia No. 2.
