Second time lucky for Shaw at British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships
It’s second time lucky for Nottingham-born James Shaw at the LTA’s British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships after his opponent pulled out injured just minutes before play was due to begin.
Shaw was due to play against fellow Brit Antony Cotterill in the Centre Court opener of the quad singles, but unfortunately, succumbed to a wrist injury.
It means Shaw has progressed to set up a match-up with third seed Heath Davidson in the quarterfinals in Nottingham.
Local-lad Shaw, who admits to spending much of his season playing overseas, had several friends and family in the crowd at Nottingham and admitted he was disappointed he did not get the chance to step out on court.
“I did not find out I was not playing until 20-25 minutes before the match – my opponent was unsure as his wrist was hurting,” said Shaw.
“We are good friends and I saw him this morning in the car park, and he mentioned his injury. I practiced this morning anyway though in preparation.
“I love playing in my hometown of Nottingham, I am often all over the world and my family and friends do not get the opportunity to see me and so being here and having local people watch is great.
“This is where I started as well, I had a few family, and friends in attendance today but unfortunately, they did not get to see me in action.”
Shaw will now turn his attention to third seed Davidson, and he admitted the chance to test himself against one of the best players in the world was appealing.
“This is a big tournament in the middle of the year and high-ranking and so it is one I am always looking forward to,” added Shaw.
“All the top players are here, it’s one that I always look out for and it’s a good test.
“I haven’t played Heath for a few years I don’t think. It will be good to compete against one of the best in the world and hopefully play this time.”
