Bayside football roundup: Bennett grabs big win, Decatur stays undefeated

Week 5 roundup: Bennett grabs big win, Decatur stays undefeated

It was an exciting Friday night of football at Wicomico County Stadium, as Salisbury rivals Parkside and James M. Bennett faced off. And the rivalry matchup did not disappoint.

It was a back-and-forth game throughout, with Bennett answering first and Parkside responding.

Zakai Smullen would record three touchdowns on the day, one as a receiver, one as a quarterback and another on the ground to lead the Clippers, and Kerontez Bratten led Parkside with two touchdowns.

After Bratten scored his second touchdown on a 70-yard run, Bennett responded with a game-winning drive that culminated in a field goal by Gianmarco Secondi to put it ahead for good, 22-21. This was Bennett's second win of the season, as it moves to 2-3 and Parkside falls to 1-4.

The rest of this week's games in the Bayside South were big blowouts, as Decatur remained undefeated with a 42-0 road win over Easton on Thursday, and Snow Hill bounced back from last week's loss to Decatur with a 41-0 win over Washington at home on Friday. Wi-Hi also played on Thursday but was shut out 28-0 in a loss to Kent Island.

Next week's games will feature arguably the biggest game of the Bayside regular season, as undefeated Stephen Decatur travels to face undefeated Kent Island. These two teams almost faced off in the Class 2A State Title game last season but will now do battle in a huge Bayside matchup.

Next week will also be a big game for Snow Hill as they travel to face Colonel Richardson in a matchup of two of the Bayside's best 1A Schools so far this year. Wi-Hi will be back on the road to face Cambridge-South Dorchester next week, and Bennett will also go on the road as it hopes to build on its momentum against a tough North Caroline team. Parkside will be back at County Stadium next week against Easton, and Washington will host Arcadia.
