Saturday's prep highlights: Mahomet-Seymour girls' wrestling qualifiers three for state finals

Class 1A Olympia Sectional

➜ Brazelton, Eastin wins sectional titles. A pair of Champaign County wrestlers who are used to the bright lights of the postseason both won sectional championships in Stanford, securing their spot in the upcoming IHSA state finals that start Thursday at State Farm Center in Champaign. Holden Brazelton from St. Joseph-Ogden at 132 pounds and Hunter Eastin from Unity at 190 both placed first in their respective weight classes, highlighting the 23 area state qualifiers to emerge from this sectional. Brazelton improved to 45-1 on the season after defeating Keygan Jennings of Farmington via a 15-0 technical fall in the title match at 132. Eastin ran his record to 43-6 after he earned a 7-4 decision against Brody Cuppernell of St. Thomas More in the title match at 190. LeRoy/Tri-Valley had three sectional champions in Brady Mouser at 106, Connor Lyons at 157 and Jacob Bischoff at 215. The Panthers will have five competitors at state after EJ Chaon placed fourth at 120 and Bo Zeleznik placed fourth at 165. Hoopeston Area had one sectional champion in Angel Zamora winning the title at 175, while Ayden Larkin will make it two Cornjerkers in Champaign after he placed fourth at 157. Joining Brazelton in Champaign for SJ-O will be Emmitt Holt at 106 and Coy Hayes at 150 after Holt finished second and Hayes finished fourth. Eastin will have Unity teammates Hunter Shike at 126, Taylor Finley at 132, Ryan Rink at 165 and Thayden Root at 175 with him in Champaign. Shike and Root placed second, Rink took third and Finley was fourth. Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley/Fisher has four state qualifiers after Carson Maxey placed second at 150, Cooper Miller placed second at 165, Shawn Schlickman finished third at 132 and Aiden Sancken was fourth at 190. Along with Cuppernell, STM will be represented at state by August Christhilf after he placed third at 175. Danny Tay of Ridgeview at 126 and Dawson Thayer of Clinton at 285 also qualified for state.

Class 1A Vandalia Sectional

➜ Oakwood/Salt Fork sends seven to state. Oakwood/Salt Fork had two wrestlers vying for sectional titles, but both ended up placing second. Still, Oakwood/Salt Fork will have seven wrestlers on the mats at State Farm Center in Champaign when the IHSA state finals start Thursday. Brayden Edwards at 113 pounds and Dalton Brown at 175 both placed second for Oakwood/Salt Fork. A quartet of wrestlers for Oakwood/Salt Fork placed third in Pedro Rangel at 132, Grant Brewer at 150, Bryson Capanksy at 157 and Jamison Chambliss at 190, while Steven Uden also clinched a state berth by finishing fourth at 106. Gabriel Kiddoo secured the lone state bid for Westville by placing fourth at 165.

Peoria Richwoods Sectional

➜ Tyler earns sectional title. Jurdan Tyler continued to assert her dominance on the mat, winning a sectional title at 190 pounds and becoming one of 10 area state qualifiers who will vie for a state title in two weeks at Grossinger Motors Arena in downtown Bloomington. Tyler registered three pins at the sectional tournament, defeating Faith Barret of Mt. Vernon in only 52 seconds in the sectional title match as Tyler improved to 23-4 on the season. Urbana teammate Rickasia Ivy will join Tyler at state after Ivy placed fourth at 140. Mahomet-Seymour qualified three wrestlers for state after Isabelle Leyhe placed second at 120, Kalista Granadino finished fourth at 115 and Jaycee Fancher finished fourth at 125. Marissa Miller gave Monticello a state qualifier after she finished second at 110, while Taylor Owens of Oakwood/Salt Fork also placed second at 140. Avery Schlickman of Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley/Fisher was third at 140 and her Falcons teammate Justice Milligan also reached state by placing fourth at 100. Phoenix Molina gave Unity a state qualifier after she was third at 235.

In girls' basketball

Class 2A Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin Regional

➜ Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin 43, Paxton-Buckley-Loda 32. Fifth-seeded Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin relied on a game-high 14 points from Ella Myers to post a regional quarterfinal win against 11th-seeded Paxton-Buckley-Loda at Wilcox Gymnasium. Beth McMahon contributed eight points for the Blue Devils (16-14), who will play fourth-seeded St. Thomas More at 7:30 p.m. Monday in a regional semifinal game. Aubrey Busboom scored a team-high 11 points for PBL (4-25).

➜ Oakwood 50, Hoopeston Area 37. A dynamic performance from Jaydah Arrowsmith, coupled with improved defense after the first quarter, sparked seventh-seeded Oakwood to a regional quarterfinal win against sixth-seeded Hoopeston Area on the Cornjerkers' home court. Arrowsmith poured in a game-high 32 points to help Oakwood (13-19) advance into a 6 p.m. regional semifinal game against top seed Watseka on Monday in Bismarck. Nikita Taylor also hit double figures with 10 points as the Comets rallied from a 14-5 deficit at the end of the first quarter. Maddie Barnes scored a team-high 13 points for the Cornjerkers (17-15), while Claire Dixon (12 points) and Brylie Cox (10 points) complemented her.

Class 2A Clifton Central Regional

➜ Prairie Central 40, Iroquois West 37. Prairie Central rallied from a 29-21 deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to earn a regional quarterfinal win in Gilman and advance the 12th-seeded Hawks into a regional semifinal game with third-seeded St. Joseph-Ogden at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Lucy Whitfill scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Prairie Central (4-25). Jayla Hammond (nine points) and Sawyer Ashman (six points, eight rebounds) also had key roles in the win for the Hawks. ILyana Nambo and Amelia Scharp each scored 12 points to pace Iroquois West (15-15).

Class 2A Clinton Regional

➜ Clinton 43, Normal U-High 32. The host and ninth-seeded Maroons prevailed against the 10th-seeded Pioneers in a regional quarterfina game, with Clara Dempsey scoring a team-high 13 points for Clinton. Regan Filkin added 12 points and Avery Smith tossed in seven points for the Maroons (21-11), who held a slim 27-24 lead entering the fourth quarter. Clinton advances to play top-seeded Deer Creek-Mackinaw at 6 p.m. Monday in a regional semifinal game.

Class 2A Monticello Regional

➜ Monticello 61, Sangamon Valley/Tri-City 14. Seventh-seeded Monticello rolled to a regional quarterfinal win at the Sievers Center in Monticello, leading 22-3 at the end of the first quarter against the 12th-seeded Storm. Maia High scored a game-high 12 points and made five steals for the Sages (13-18), who will play third-seeded Paris at 7:30 p.m. Monday in a regional semifinal game. Ali Weidner (11 points, five assists, four rebounds, three steals) and Megan Allen (10 points) also reached double figures for Monticello.

➜ Warrensburg-Latham 59, Westville 29. The 11th-seeded Tigers fell behind the eighth-seeded Cardinals by double digits in the first quarter and couldn't make up the deficit in a regional quarterfinal loss in Warrensburg. Lani Gondzur scored a team-high 11 points for Westville (5-23) and Hadley Jones had six points.

Class 2A Sullivan Regional

➜ Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond 55, Pana 48. Claire Seal had another jaw-dropping performance, lifting fifth-seeded Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond to a regional quarterfinal win against 10th-seeded Pana in Arthur. Seal scored 33 points and hauled in 21 rebounds for the Knights (19-12), who will play fourth-seeded Sullivan at 7:30 p.m. Monday in a regional semifinal game. Sophie Monts also contributed, scoring 10 points and grabbing five rebounds as ALAH went into halftime ahead 30-20.

Class 1A Chrisman Regional

➜ Chrisman 37, Heritage 27. Chrisman trailed 18-17 at the end of the third quarter before the eighth-seeded Cardinals put together a strong fourth quarter to defeat the 10th-seeded Hawks in a regional quarterfinal game at Roger Beals Court. Lyndsi Smith scored a game-high 11 points for the Cardinals (8-19), who will play second-seeded Salt Fork at 6 p.m. Monday in a regional semifinal game. Olivia Radke added eight points, while teammate Taylor Jones came through with seven points and 14 rebounds. Addi Hopper had a team-high 10 points for Heritage (2-28).

➜ Georgetown-Ridge Farm 45, Schlarman 17. Kendall Roberts scored a game-high 16 points, Milee Ellis delivered 13 points and sixth-seeded Georgetown-Ridge Farm cruised to a regional quarterfinal win against the 12th-seeded Hilltoppers. Sydney Spesard added eight points for the Buffaloes (16-10), who will carry a seven-game win streak into a regional semifinal game with third-seeded Arcola at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Addison Forsyth led Schlarman (0-13) with eight points.

Class 1A Dieterich Regional

➜ Neoga 58, Cerro Gordo/Bement 41. Ninth-seeded Cerro Gordo/Bement saw its season come to a close with a loss at eighth-seeded Neoga in a regional quarterfinal game. Haylei Simpson scored a team-high 20 points for the Broncos (18-13), while Caroline Hill and Skye Tieman each chipped in eight points.

Class 1A Fisher Regional

➜ Fisher 67, Uni High 35. Fourth-seeded Fisher steadily pulled away from the 14th-seeded Illineks to earn a regional quarterfinal win on the Bunnies' home court. Melina Luyando scored a game-high 21 points for Fisher (12-19), while Jenna Clemmons compiled a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Paige Hott gave Fisher three players in double figures with 12 points as the Bunnies led 35-16 at halftime. Fisher advances to play sixth-seeded Ridgeview at 7:30 p.m. Monday in a regional semifinal game. Gabby Mongwa scored a team-high 12 points for Uni High (4-18).

➜ Ridgeview 65, Blue Ridge 23. Sixth-seeded Ridgeview started strong and built a 24-0 lead in the first quarter en route to a regional quarterfinal win in Colfax. Kamryn Rinkenberger scored a game-high 16 points and Zori Terven added 11 points for the Mustangs (12-19), who play fourth-seeded Fisher at 7:30 p.m. Monday in a regional semifinal game.

Watchfire Signs Shootout

➜ Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin 60, Urbana 41. Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin had doubled up Urbana by halftime in Danville, leading 37-18, and kept the Tigers at bay in the second half. BHRA (27-3) won its 17th straight game thanks in large part from four players in double figures. Keison Peoples scored a game-high 16 points, Ayden Ingram tallied 12 points, Micah Stanford had 11 points and Chaz Dubois added 10 points. Jaiden Anindo scored a team-high 12 points for Urbana (10-13).

➜ Danville 51, Glenbard South 41. Danville trailed 37-32 to start the fourth quarter before the host Vikings rallied to earn the win on their home court and snap a three-game losing streak. Diddy Robinson scored a game-high 17 points for Danville (10-16), while CL Dye almost hit double figures with nine points. Devan Larkin and Persiris Menifield each added seven points for Danville.

➜ Kankakee 68, Mahomet-Seymour 32. Mahomet-Seymour struggled offensively and couldn't keep pace with the Kays in Danville. Landyn Hannah scored a team-high 11 points for the Bulldogs (11-15).

➜ La Salette 56, Heritage 21. La Salette steadily built its lead throughout in recording the win in Danville. Eamon Martin led the Lions (18-8) with 14 points and Charles Prather finished with 14 points. Brennan Struck led Heritage (3-25) with eight points.

➜ Rantoul 70, Bloomington 37. Rantoul used a strong second half to cruise to the win in Danville. Melvin Hall led the Eagles (6-17) with 14 points. DJ Davis wasn't far behind with 13 points, while Ross Gawenda and Tysean Moody each finished with 10 points.

Central Illinois Conference/National Trail Conference Shootout

➜ Tuscola 43, Altamonta 30. In a rematch of a Class 1A sectional title game from a season ago, Tuscola earned another hard-fought win, this time in Warrensburg. Kam Sweetnam scored a game-high 13 points for the Warriors (23-5) in their fourth straight win. Sawyer Woodard (nine points), Josiah Hortin (seven points, 10 rebounds) and Jordan Quinn (seven points, eight rebounds) also chipped in for Tuscola.

East Central Illinois Conference Tournament

➜ Judah Christian 66, DeLand-Weldon 21. Second-seeded Judah Christian easily won for the sixth time in its last seven games with a quarterfinal win against seventh-seeded DeLand-Weldon on the Tribe's home court in Champaign. Cameron Carson led Judah Christian (11-14) with 15 points, while Josh Kursell finished with 14 points and Grant Ipsen had nine points.

➜ Normal Calvary 44, Uni High 42. Fifth-seeded Uni High kept it close, but couldn't pull out the win against fourth-seeded Normal Calvary at Judah Christian in Champaign. Coleman Clougherty scored a game-high 18 points and Olisa Allanah netted 16 points for the Illineks (5-19).

Nontournament

➜ Beecher 66, Prairie Central 58. Tyler Curl scored a game-high 28 points for Prairie Central, but the Hawks lost a nonconference home game. Levi Goad (13 points) and Gavin Tredennick (11 points) also hit double figures for Prairie Central (16-12).

➜ Iroquois West 45, South Newton (Ind.) 36. Jace Pankey produced a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds to lead Iroquios West to a nonconference home win on the Raiders' senior night in Gilman. Garrett Tammen (nine points), Tyler Read (eight points) and Beau Howe (eight points) all contribtued for Iroquois West, which led 24-14 at halftime.

➜ Maroa-Forsyth 56, Argenta-Oreana 55. In a close nonconference game throughout, the visiting Trojans earned the win against the host Bombers. Ethan Mahan scored a team-high 17 points for Argenta-Oreana (16-12), while Chase Logue had 14 points and Jalynn Flowers wound up with 13 points.

➜ St. Teresa 58, Monticello 49. Monticello trailed 35-24 at halftime and couldn't mount a second-half rally in a home nonconference loss at the Sievers Center. Trey Welter scored a team-high 11 points for the Sages (13-13), while teammates Tyler Blythe had 10 points and Raiden Colbert had nine points.
