Sardis QB Brian Chapman throws for 5 TDs to highlight Gadsden area top performers for Week Zero

The high school sports scene started up Thursday around the Gadsden area with Week Zero football action. Here are the top performers:

Football

Ashville's Jonathan Beason ran for 211 yards on 19 attempts in a loss to St. Clair County.

Ashville's JB Potter recorded 14 tackles against St. Clair County.

Albertville's Hunter Smith caught six passes for 59 yards and a touchdown in Thursday's 34-6 loss to Arab.

Boaz's Presley Fant for 56 yards and a touchdown while adding 64 receiving yards and another score in a 43-21 loss to Jacksonville.

Boaz's Tyler Pierce went 14 of 30 for 219 yards and two scores.

Cherokee County's Jacob Cornejo ran for 150 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Alexandria.

Cherokee County's Tae Diamond ran for 89 yards and a touchdown on four carries.

Fort Payne's Kaden Debose ran for 118 yards and a touchdown while catching four passes for 53 yards and a score in a 56-51 loss to Scottsboro.

Fort Payne's Blake Griggs caught six passes for 127 yards and a touchdown, while throwing for another.

Fort Payne's Nolan Fowler caught seven passes for 118 yards.

Fort Payne's Brannon Oliver caught eight passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns.

Fort Payne's Dax Varnadore went 27 for 42 for 434 yards and four touchdowns.

Gadsden City's TJ Worthy accounted for four touchdowns, including a run of 93 yards and reception of 50 yards, and 183 all-purpose yards in a 37-20 win over Carver-Montgomery.

Gadsden City's Luke Waldrop and Matthew Sparks connected on a 50-yard catch-and-run touchdown in the team's win.

Guntersville's Enelson Delva ran for 77 yards and a touchdown in 14-10 win over Southside.

Jacksonville's Zae English ran for 197 yards on 14 attempts in a 43-21 win over Boaz.

Jacksonville's Ky'Dric Fisher caught five passes for 97 yards and three touchdowns.

Jacksonville's Jim Ogle went 19 of 29 for 245 yards passing and four touchdowns in a win over Boaz.

Sardis's Brian Chapman threw for five touchdowns going 7 for 9 for 154 yards in a 60-6 win over DAR.

Sardis's Grant Coe ran and threw for a touchdown, to Brayden Whidden.

Sardis's Alex Davis blocked a punt then returned it for a touchdown.

Sardis's Blaze Gerhart ran for a touchdown.

Sardis's Connor Lowery caught two touchdown passes.

Sardis's Eli Morton caught two touchdown passes.

Sand Rock's Alec Ashley threw for three touchdowns in his first start in the teams 48-22 loss to Spring Garden.

Spring Garden's Chapel Pope ran for 55 yards and two touchdowns while adding 61 receiving yards and a touchdown in the win over Sand Rock.

Spring Garden's John Welsh ran for 83 yards and a touchdown.

Volleyball

Cherokee County's Macy Lea recorded 40 assists and 8 digs across two wins on Thursday.

Sand Rock's Katelyn St. Clair recorded 25 kills and 13 blocks in two wins.

Sand Rock's Rylin St. Clair made 43 assists across two games.

Cross Country

Hokes Bluff's Ethan Patterson placed sixth in the Wildcat twilight with a time of 19:06.
