One of Sarasota's largest annual events, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, has announced it will change calendar dates.

Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix, which has traditionally been held over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, will now take place Sept. 13-15, according to a press release. Reasons given for the date change include driving more business to local retailers, hotels and restaurants during the off-season; helping alleviate limited City and County resources when held over the busy Fourth of July weekend; and moving away from peak bird and turtle nesting season on local beaches.

The powerboat races will take place Sept. 14-15 off Lido Beach, with a Sept. 13 pit party in the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall parking lot featuring live music, food and powerboats on display to the general public. There will also be VIP viewing options for the event, and a Class 1 Experience that includes private access to parties, events, tours, team meet and greet opportunities, and "ultra-premium" race viewing both days.

“We are excited to welcome the annual Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix back on their new September dates," said Visit Sarasota County director of sports Pete Harvey in a statement. "The Grand Prix draws enthusiastic crowds, capturing the attention of visitors and residents alike. It attracts a diverse range of attendees, which generates a sizeable surge in tourism and spending.”

Another annual Sarasota-Manatee attraction featuring powerboat races, the Bradenton Area River Regatta, also recently announced the dates for its next event. The 10th annual Regatta, which bills itself as Manatee County's largest spectator event, will return to the shorelines of Bradenton and Palmetto on Feb. 21 and 22, 2025, featuring a drone laser light show and fireworks display the first day, racing on the second, and live music both days.
