San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs preseason game: Live stream, time, date, how to watch

The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers faced off just two years ago in Super Bowl 54, and both teams have something to prove in their 2021 preseason-opening rematch.

The Niners struggled with injuries last season, and starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is a big question mark coming into this year. He played only six games in 2020 thanks to a lingering ankle injury, but he is still expected to start in the first preseason game according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Garoppolo will have competition for the top spot in Trey Lance, the rookie quarterback the 49ers traded up to draft at No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. Lance played college football for North Dakota State, the perennial FCS powerhouse. Shanahan said Lance will take over for Garoppolo after the first series against the Chiefs.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said the team will play their starters for the first quarter against the Niners, so Lance will likely get his first reps against a nearly full-strength NFL defense.

The preseason matchup will also be Lance's first time playing in a game since Oct. 3, 2020. He competed only once in his final collegiate season, and he was drafted so early largely based on a stellar showing in 2019. He led North Dakota State to an undefeated season, notched 1,100 rushing yards, and made a name for himself as a strong and mechanically sound passer.
