San Elizario girls soccer players earn All-State honors

Four San Elizario High School girls soccer players have been named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-State team in Class 4A.

Forwards America Barrera and Judith Hernandez, along with center midfielders Dyvette Trejo and Anela Chairez earned the recognition.

Barrera, who was named All-State by the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches last week, scored 41 goals and had 17 assists, Hernandez had 28 goals and 10 assists, Chairez had 24 goals and 12 assists and Trejo scored six goals and had 12 assists.

The Eagles reached the Region I-4A semifinals this past season. Barrera and Hernandez are seniors, Trejo is a junior and Chairez is a sophomore.

San Elizario, Eastlake players in All-Star game

San Elizario senior soccer player Alan Jurado was selected to play in the TASCO Texas Senior Showcase on May 13 in San Antonio. He'll be part of a team consisting of players from Region I that will compete against players from Region II. Jurado scored 27 goals for the Eagles, who reached the state tournament in Class 4A and lost in the semfinals.

San Elizario coach Max Sappenfield will help coach the team.

Joining Jurado will be Eastlake players Jordan Widner and Gustavo Muela. Widner scored 20 goals and had 19 assists and Muela had 12 goals and 11 assists. Eastlake coach Gibby Widner, who is Jordan's father, will also be a coach in the game.
