San Elizario boys soccer team defeats Austin, moves on to regional tournament

The quest for a fourth state title continued Monday night for the San Elizario boys soccer team with a 5-0 win against Austin in the Class 4A regional quarterfinals at Del Valle High School.

How the Eagles did it

San Elizario scored four first half goals and defeated the Panthers for the third time this season.

Angel Salas and brothers Eduardo Marquez and Francisco Marquez led the way offensively for the Eagles with multipe goals combined.

Playoff success

The Eagles defeated Pecos and Wichita Falls Hirschi in the first two playoff matches and have outscored their three playoff opponents, 14-0.

San Elizario next heads to Justin, Texas, for the regional tournament scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

Austin with solid success

The Panthers were in the playoffs for the first time since 2018 and reached the regional quarterfinals with wins against San Angelo Lake View and Perryton.

"I've coached three state championship teams here at San Elizario and this is the most talented team we've had," Eagles coach Max Sappenfield said.

What the winning players said

"Playing with this team is fun and we play for each other," Salas said. "This win was a big step for us. We got to Final Four last year, but we didn't put in as much work as this team."
