Sam Howell rushes for two touchdowns in preseason opener
Former UNC football quarterback Sam Howell had an impressive debut for the Washington Commanders in Saturday’s preseason opener, nearly helping the team pull off a comeback win.
After trailing by two scores, Howell led the Commanders on two scoring drives as he found the end zone on not one but two rushing touchdowns which gave Washington a brief lead. Howell used both his arm and legs to lead the scoring drives and actually looked impressive doing so.
The quarterback scrambled for a 17-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 20-13 and then again for a one-yard touchdown followed by a two-point conversion successful attempt:

On the day, Howell finished completing 8 of 15 attempts for 148 passing yards, two rushing touchdowns, and a passer rating of 82.4.
It was an impressive day for the rookie, especially seeing that he’s in a battle with Taylor Heinicken for the backup job behind Carson Wentz. Howell is off to a good start early in preseason and can build on this moving forward.
