Saints sign Brandon Marshall after losing Dez Bryant to injury
Ever since news came that Dez Bryant suffered a torn Achilles in his second practice with the New Orleans Saints, there’s been reporting that the Saints would likely turn to another veteran receiver it brought in for a workout the same day Bryant was brought in: Brandon Marshall.
Now the ink is drying on that deal.
Brandon Marshall signs one-year deal
Via ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Saints and Marshall have finalized a one-year deal.
Nick Underhill, Saints reporter for the New Orleans Advocate, wrote on Sunday night that the team would have Marshall in New Orleans on Monday with the intent of getting him into the fold. Marshall impressed the team in his workout last week, Underhill wrote, but ultimately signed Bryant to provide a second true receiver option to the offense.
Saints’ assistant general manager Jeff Ireland was the GM of the Miami Dolphins in 2010 when the Dolphins acquired Marshall in a trade with Denver.
Marshall has chance to make playoffs for first time
The 34-year-old Marshall began this season with the Seattle Seahawks, but was released on Oct. 30 after six largely unproductive games; he had 11 catches for 136 yards and one touchdown.
New Orleans marks the seventh team Marshall has played for in his 13-year career, but in that time he’s never been to the playoffs. At 8-1 after their road drubbing of the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, New Orleans certainly looks poised for a postseason run.
