Saint Mary’s golfer Lizak jumps up leaderboard; Belles tied for 17th at NCAA DIII tourney

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. — Saint Mary’s College golfer Julia Lizak finds herself tied for 10th place during the rain-delayed second round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Championships at the Keene Trace Golf Club.

Lizak, who opened the tournament with a five-over-par 77 on Tuesday, fashioned a one-under 71 at the par-72, 5,846-yard Keene Trace in Wednesday’s second round which was twice suspended by weather delays. Lizak’s four-over 148 was the overnight individual lead. Karen Lee of the University of Texas at Dallas was at two-under through eight holes when play was suspended.

Lizak, a sophomore from Riverview, Mich., and Divine Child High School, plays No. 2 for coach Susan Holt’s Belles, who combined for 318 Wednesday for a two-day total of 64-over 640 and a tie for 17th place in the 30-team field. The Belles are 11 strokes behind Grinnell College, which is 15th.

Following the completion of the second round Thursday, the top 15 teams and the top six individuals not on those teams will make the 36-hole cut.

As she did in the opening round, Lizak carded five birdies in her round (Nos. 4, 6, 12, 13 and 16) while making nine pars and just four bogeys.

Sophomore No. 4 Amanda Melling finished with an 83 for a 164 total. Senior No. 1 Haley Angel of Tampa, Fla., followed her opening 77 with a round of 89 and was at 22-over 166. Junior No. 3 Katelyn Tokarz, who struggled to an opening 91, was 12 strokes better Wednesday with her round of seven-over 79 that included 12 pars and was at 170. Also improving by two strokes was freshman No. 5 Colleen Hand, who shot an 85 for a 172 total.
