Sacred Heart-Griffin, Jacksonville, South County capture boys golf regional titles

Here are the Springfield area boys golfers advancing to sectionals set for Monday, October 2nd.

The subsequent IHSA state finals run Oct. 6-7.

CLASS 3A

EDWARDSVILLE REGIONAL

What to know: Chatham Glenwood achieved second place as a team just two strokes behind team champion Edwardsville at Belk Park Golf Course in Wednesday's slate of regional action.

Senior Bradyn Sayarath was second overall with an even-par 72 behind Edwardsville’s Mason Lewis (69).

Junior Cam Appenzeller tied for sixth place with a 75. Drew Downen (80) and Brock Bredehoft (84) rounded out the score for the Titans, who won the Central State Eight Conference title.

Other advancing individuals: Springfield High’s Julian Valenti (76) and James Oh (80)

CLASS 2A

TAYLORVILLE REGIONAL

What to know: Senior Logan Smith topped the entire field by two strokes and led South County to the regional team title at Lakeshore Golf Course.

Smith finished 5-over-par 77. Hillsboro sophomore Colton Weiss and Bethalto Civic Memorial senior Connor Wells each tied for second at 79.

Smith’s teammate, senior Tanner Frye, followed in a tie for fourth place at 80 with Staunton senior Broc Best. Caden Colwell, Brandt Crews and Trevor Colwell each had 94 for the Vipers.

Staunton also advanced as a team in second place. Bryce Coalson (87), Preston Denney (90) and Owen Rizzi (92) rounded out the Bulldogs’ score.

Other advancing individuals: Hillsboro’s Tycen Thacker (90) and Carson Walker (91)

MONMOUTH-ROSEVILLE REGIONAL

What to know: Jacksonville earned the regional team title by nine strokes ahead of runner-up Dunlap at Gibson Woods Golf Course.

Junior Colton Barr fired a team-best 3-over-par 73 while freshman Maddux Moore followed with a 79. Thatcher Frye (81) and Elias Martin (84) also chipped in.

Dunlap’s Nolan Eccles was the medalist with a 72.

CHAMPAIGN CENTENNIAL REGIONAL

What to know: Senior Cal Johnson captured the individual top podium by two strokes and vaulted Sacred Heart-Griffin to the regional team title at the University of Illinois Orange Course.

He shot 1-under-par 71 ahead of Mahomet-Seymour teammates Kelton Hennesy and Reis Claybrooke’s pair of 73s. Mahomet finished in second place as a team.

Johnson’s teammates also posted stellar rounds. Senior Augustine Hyde tied for fourth place with a 75 while Max Gebhardt (76) and Alio Giacomini (78) were close behind.

Other advancing individuals: Williamsville’s Max Fisher (78), Will Seman (79), Cole Brewer (82) and Leo Keebler (83); and Rochester’s Jake McCloud (81) and Talon Sperry (84).

CLASS 1A

GREENVIEW REGIONAL

What to know: Pleasant Plains earned second place as a team at Country Hills Golf Course to advance to sectionals.

Juniors Anderson Thielen and Ethan Griminger tied at 81. Owen Nehrt (87) and Taylor Brewer (89) completed the team score.

Luke Brady was the medalist with a 2-over-par 74 for team champion Bloomington Central Catholic.

Other advancing individuals: Petersburg PORTA’s Trace Donnan (83) and Brady Kinney (84); and Mason City Illini Central’s Avery Higdon (85)

ALTON MARQUETTE REGIONAL

What to know: Last year’s 1A state runner-up performer, senior Tug Schwab, tied for eighth place individually at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course to catapult Litchfield to third place as a team.

He shot five-over-par 77 while sophomore Sam Schwab shot a 78. Tucker Maguire (84) and Ian Otto (85) helped secure the final spot for sectionals.

Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran’s Ryan Suhure won with a 71.

Other advancing individual: Carlinville’s Tate Duckels (86)

DECATUR ST. TERESA REGIONAL

What to know: North Mac picked up third place as a team at Hickory Point Golf Course to advance to sectionals.

Junior Aiden Hatalla led the way with an 84, followed by Camden Earley (90), Nolan Fester (97) and Griffin Wiseman (102).

Sullivan’s Brett Bushue was the medalist with a 7-over-par 79.

Other advancing individuals: Pana’s Ryan Karbach (86), Lutheran’s Max Yenchko (89) and Auburn’s Asher Root (93)

MOUNT STERLING BROWN COUNTY REGIONAL

What to know: Sophomore A.J. Charpentier garnered first place by five strokes and Jacksonville Routt settled for second place as a team by just one stroke behind champion LVC at Rolling Greens Golf Course.

Charpentier carded even-par 73 ahead of Illini Bluffs’ Chris Drake (78).

Routt senior Conrad Charpentier followed in third place with a 79. Eli Bryant (88) and Jacob Brown (92) also contributed.

Rushville-Industry gained third place and included Reed Fretueg (81), Bennett Fretueg (84), Carter Fretueg (85) and Hudson Brubaker (86).

Other advancing individual: Havana’s Thurston Sisson (89)
