Ruidoso Derby qualifier Ivory Senator has died, NM Racing commission confirms

Ivory Senator, who was second-fastest qualifier for the June 10 Ruidoso Derby, has died, the New Mexico Racing Commission confirmed on Monday.

Ivory Senator competed in Sunday's seventh race at Ruidoso Downs Race Track and Casino and finished second to Cyber Attack with a time of 19.611 seconds. There were 10 trials on Sunday and the 10 fastest horses qualified for the finals. He was vanned off after the race according to the website Equibase Chart.

A time and cause of death of Ivory Senator is not immediately known. An animal autopsy known as necropsy was expected to be performed on the horse to learn more about the cause of death.

Ivory Senator had raced nine times, which included Sunday's start, with four wins and two second-place showings.

Ivory Senator was a 3-year-old gelding, who was bred in Oklahoma and was owned by Louis A. Trey Malechek, III. Ricardo Armendariz was the trainer.
