How the Royals ballpark could take shape in KC’s Crossroads district

It’s still unclear how a Kansas City Royals baseball stadium would fit into the Crossroads Arts District, even though the team now privately has said that area is their preferred location to build.

However, the Kansas City Business Journal learned through recent conversations with local officials and real estate sources how a Crossroads ballpark could take shape.

The Royals haven’t yet publicly announced where they aim to put a new stadium or commented on the East Crossroads area since resurrecting it as an option after previously dismissing it.

Analysis of city records shows how the team’s land assembly and demolition needs for the underlying properties could differ from the East Village, long considered the leading ballpark location in Jackson County.

Central to the East Crossroads site is The Kansas City Star’s former offices and printing press at 1601 McGee St. Its owners, the Privitera family, have commissioned multiple reuse concepts for the two-block structure, but the ideas have no relation to the Royals’ planning.
