Roundup: Watkins Memorial’s James fires 65 at Cumberland Trail

Gracie James fired a 65 at Cumberland Trail on Thursday for the Watkins Memorial girls golf team to take medalist honors during the Warriors’ Watkins Memorial Invitational.

James’ round included a blistering 29 on the back nine. James recorded seven birdies and an eagle on the Par-5 No. 12 to finish two strokes ahead of Olentangy’s Meadow Tian.

Lakewood’s Lexi French shot 70 to tie for fourth, and teammates Avery Thompson followed with 78 and Lauren Griffith 88.

Newark Catholic’s Caylee Lattimer shot 83, Leah Moberg 88, Natalie Holsky 89 and Sami Spearman 93. Watkins’ Jacy Severance and Bailey Moyer each shot 100.

Granville lowers mark

Granville shot a school-record 310 at EagleSticks to take runner-up during the Circle K Invitational.

Olivia Jones fired 72 to lead the Blue Aces. Lydia Wigal added 77, Avery Staten 79 and Ella Clarke 82.

BOYS GOLF

Riggleman notches 70

Nathan Riggleman fired a 70 at Cumberland Trail to take medalist honors and lead Newark Catholic to a record-setting performance during the Watkins Memorial Invitational.

The Green Wave lowered their school record to 294, winning the team championship and finishing 10 strokes ahead of Dublin Jerome.

Brian Luft took runner-up at 72. Brogan Sullivan followed at 75, Max Vanoy 77 and Bobby Kieber 78 for NC.

Christian Cave shot 83, Kaden Ross 88 and Maddox Tanzillo 90 to lead the host Warriors. Maximus Mitchell shot 84 and Braeden Archibald 89 to lead Johnstown.

GIRLS TENNIS

Newark sweeps

Andy Hupp and Lacey Layne and Maria Arnold and Dia Bailey each did not lose a game in sweeping doubles matches for Newark in a 5-0 victory at Logan.

Addi Taylert, 6-4, 6-4, Vanessa Bennett, 6-2, 6-0, and Becca Helber, 6-2, 6-3, won singles matches for the Wildcats (3-0).

Granville rolls

Granville beat visiting Grandview Heights.

Abby Riley, Ela Kendrick and Grace Emery won singles matches for the Blue Aces (4-1). Teresa Collins and Sarah Williams and Sadie Landry and Hannah Bishop won doubles matches.
