Roundup: Vermilion throws no-hitter in Newark baseball victory against Central Crossing

Cayden Vermilion struck out seven Wednesday, firing a five-inning no-hitter for the Newark baseball team in a 10-0 victory against visiting Central Crossing (2-8, 0-5) in Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division play.

Vermilion retired 15 of 16 batters with one hit batsman. Moses Crane tripled and doubled and scored three runs, while Bodie Smith totaled three hits and three RBIs for the Wildcats (4-4, 4-1). Seth Fish had a double, a run and three RBIs. Blane Sturm had a double, two runs and two RBIs.

NC beats Heights

Bryan McAnally and Rocco Capretta bookended a four-run sixth inning with doubles, sparking Newark Catholic in a 6-2 victory against visiting Licking Heights in Licking County League play.

Cooper Leibas added a hit, a run and two RBIs. Capretta recorded two RBIs, and Owen Helms had an RBI for the Green Wave (4-3, 2-2). Leibas struck out five and allowed three hits in three scoreless innings in relief of Kane Stephey, who struck out nine and allowed two unearned runs.

Joel Busker doubled and singled with an RBI for the Hornets (3-3, 1-1). Carson Johnson added two hits, and Maxim Fink and Richard Hill had a hit and a run apiece.

Lakewood edges Granville

Peyton Tichenor struck out eight and allowed an unearned run in a five-hitter, pitching Lakewood to a 3-1 victory against visiting Granville in LCL play.

Nate Gall’s two-run double led the Lancers (6-1, 4-0). Tichenor and Colton Ferry scored a run apiece. Jalen White added a hit and an RBI.

Wilson Wells struck out eight and allowed three hits and no earned runs in 5 1/3 innings for the Blue Aces (3-3, 1-1). Nolan Tracy doubled twice, and Theo Talbott matched him with two hits and scored a run.

Heath blanks Zanesville

Wyatt Binckley struck out five against just one walk in a six-inning no-hitter, pitching Heath to a 10-0 victory against visiting Zanesville (1-5, 0-4) in LCL play.

Kaden Green led the Bulldogs (6-1, 3-0) with three hits, including a double, a run and an RBI. Riley Baum added two hits, including a triple, two runs and two RBIs, Connor Corbett two hits, two runs and an RBI and Hayden Woodward and Jaiden Dansby two hits, one run and one RBI apiece.

Valley beats Northridge

Hayden Rodgers doubled twice and scored two runs for Licking Valley in an 8-0 victory at Northridge in LCL play.

Rodgers also struck out seven in four innings. Adam West pitched the final two innings for the Panthers (6-1, 1-1). Aidan Harrold doubled, scored two runs and drove in one. Zane Hancock and Brody Rodgers added a hit and two RBIs apiece.

Noah Mason recorded two hits, and David Carr singled for the Vikings (0-10, 0-4). Carr also struck out three and allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

SOFTBALL

Patena leads Granville

Sophia Patena was a perfect 5 for 5, scoring a run and driving in three, fueling Granville in a 9-1 victory at Lakewood in LCL play.

Megan Lodge added three hits, three runs and an RBI. Maia Helling chipped in with a hit, a run and two RBIs. Hanah Rogovin posted two runs for the Blue Aces (11-1, 4-0). Ally Ernsberger struck out nine and allowed four hits in six shutout innings.

Carly Williams had a hit and a run, while Rachel Crist recorded a double and an RBI for the Lancers (6-3, 3-2). Dani Stewart struck out two and allowed one run in three innings of relief.

Penick powers Valley

Taylor Penick homered twice during a 4-for-4 day, driving in four runs for Licking Valley in a 16-2 victory at Northridge in LCL play.

Tori Baughman and Chloe Cooperider added three hits apiece, combining for three runs and three RBIs for the Panthers (4-5, 2-2), and Liz Korns added a double, a run and three RBIs. Abbe McNabb had two doubles, a run and two RBIs. McNabb also struck out seven in five innings.

Gracie Smith doubled and singled, scored a run and drove in one, and Camryn Moore scored a run for the Vikings (2-6, 0-3).

NC beats Heights

Kami Diaz hit two solo home runs as a part of a 3-for-3 performance for Newark Catholic in a 10-7 victory against visiting Licking Heights in LCL play.

Maris Knowlton also had three hits. She totaled two runs and an RBI. Joanna Bailey added two doubles, two runs and an RBI. Jahni Whitney recorded a double, a run and two RBIs for the Green Wave (3-4, 1-2). Avery Nagel struck out four and allowed three earned runs in five innings.

Ava Von Bargen homered, recording three hits and three RBIs for the Hornets (4-4, 1-2). Lily Meidl also homered, and she and Savannah Christ recorded two hits, a run and an RBI apiece. Lily Reich added two hits and an RBI.

Watkins wins at Utica

Jordyn Wycuff, Maleya Thompson and Cortney Dobbs each homered for Watkins Memorial in an 11-1 victory at Utica in LCL play.

Wycuff racked up three hits and five RBIs, and Kylie Trouten added a hit and two runs for the Warriors (9-0, 3-0). Carsyn Cassady fired six innings, giving up just two hits.

Emily Meyers and Carlie Hill each singled for Utica (3-4, 2-4), and Lauren Schmitt scored a run.

Heath beats Zanesville

Karli Staley and Kylie Green combined for 14 strikeouts in five four-hit innings for Heath in a 13-1 victory against visiting Zanesville (0-6, 0-3) in LCL play.

Kyndall Spicer totaled two hits, including a double, a run and two RBIs. Sydney Cottrell posted a hit, two runs and two RBIs; and Lexi Purington had a hit and a run for the Bulldogs (7-3, 4-1).

Newark falls at home

Amora Spring singled for the lone hit for Newark in a 5-0 loss to visiting Central Crossing (6-4, 2-0) in OCC-Buckeye play.

Spring struck out three and allowed three earned runs in five innings for the Wildcats (3-6, 2-1). Carissa Shilts struck out two in two scoreless innings of relief.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Newark wins in five

Miles Drake distributed 30 assists and added three kills, two aces and a block, rallying Newark from a 2-0 deficit in a victory at Delaware, 22-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 15-13.

Kahne Pastorius totaled 14 kills and four blocks for the Wildcats (3-7). Curtis Irby added 10 kills and three blocks, while James Daugherty had eight kills and Roman Green recorded three aces and 19 digs.

BOYS TENNIS

Watkins wins on road

Watkins Memorial swept the singles matches in a 4-1 victory at Lancaster to stay unbeaten.

Liam Grennan, 6-0, 6-0, Graham Smith, 6-0, 7-5, and Nathan Walter, 6-1, 6-1 won singles matches for the Warriors (7-0). Wyatt Meade and Michael Hare also won at No. 1 doubles, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9).

BOYS LACROSSE

Newark splits

Ricky Frazier and Max Frost each had a hat trick in Newark’s 10-4 victory at Xenia last Friday. The Wildcats (4-2) also lost 10-7 at Northmont on Saturday.

Drayson Peterson added two goals and three assists, Hunter Berona two goals and Austin Reed two assists in the win. Jaeyden Smith set a school record with 13 faceoff wins in each match, and Matt Johnson made 13 saves in the loss.
