ROUNDUP: T-Birds, Falcons, Miners get girls basketball triumphs

Jan. 5—Shelby Seay scored 22 points and three teammates also scored in double-figures, leading North Central to a commanding 77-6 victory over South Vermillion in high school girls basketball play Thursday in the Wildcats' gym.

Also for the victorious Thunderbirds, Jalyn Davidson scored 18 points, Emma Hennecke had 13, and Maggie Scott added 10. Cambree Stivers hit a 3-pointer for South Vermillion.

North Central (now 10-8) plays Tuesday at Sullivan.

In other girls basketball:

—North Vermillion 39, Riverton Parke 29 — At Mecca, leading just 26-23 after three quarters, visiting North Vermillion poured in 13 fourth-quarter points to secure a victory Thursday night.

Kera Dunham had 11 points and Cadence Dunham 10 for the Falcons (now 7-9). Haylee Mathas scored 10 points for Riverton Parke (4-12).

The Panthers play 7:30 p.m. Monday at South Putnam.

—Linton 49, Vincennes Rivet 34 — At Linton, Bradie Chambers scored a game-high 23 points and Sydney Jerrells added 15 to lead the host Miners to victory Thursday.

Linton (14-5) rallied from a 26-21 halftime deficit and held Vincennes Rivet to just eight second-half points.

The Miners play Jan. 13 at Evansville Memorial.

College baseball

—Sycamore gets early honors — Indiana State junior relief pitcher Jared Spencer was named to the Perfect Game Preseason All-American team as announced by the organization this week. The Sycamore left-hander was named to the Second Team following a standout 2023 season on the mound.

Spencer was the lone Missouri Valley player to receive the honors by the organization. It marks his second preseason recognition heading into the season after being named to D1Baseball's 2024 MLB Draft: Top 100 College Prospects list in the fall.

The Centreville, Mich., native made a team-high 25 appearances on the mound in relief in 2023 serving as the Sycamores' primary closer. He posted a 3-2 record with a 3.86 ERA over 37.1 innings while adding a team-high seven saves.

He made his 2023 debut on Feb. 18 against Quinnipiac but hit his stride midway through the season in nonconference play. Spencer posted his first two wins of the year on back-to-back weeks against SEMO and Illinois in mid-March.

He added a season-high seven strikeouts in a relief outing against Michigan State. Additional notable relief appearances include a 3.0-inning save in ISU's 4-0 shutout of Indiana, while also going the final 2.0-innings in closing out the Sycamores' win at Vanderbilt.

Spencer shined in the postseason, posting back-to-back saves in the first two games of the Terre Haute Regional against Wright State and Iowa to send the Sycamores to the regional final. He added a third postseason appearance in relief at TCU in the super-regional finale.
