Roundup: Newark Catholic’s Pribonic, Watkins Memorial’s Dutton shine in swim opener
Isabella Pribonic swam a time of 57.33 in the 100 backstroke Saturday to take runner-up for the Newark Catholic girls swim team during the Neb Reeb Invitational at Ohio State.
Watkins Memorial’s Ava Dutton placed third in both the 50 freestyle (23.91) and 100 free (52.11), resetting programs records in both.
Watkins teammate Olivia Crock placed fourth in the 200 free (1:55.54). Granville’s foursome of Lydia Sturgeon, Grace Largent, Lily Hyslop and Sydney Lauffer also placed fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:51.53).
Pribonic added a sixth in the 200 free (1:56.98) for the Green Wave, and Ella Schirtzinger finished 19th in the 50 free (25.99). Crock finished 13th in the 100 butterfly (59.86) for the Warriors.
Sturgeon added a pair of fifths for the Blue Aces in the 200 free (1:56.42) and 100 free (52.89) and joined Hyslop, Largent and Lylah Jacobs on the eighth-place 400 free relay (3:46.25). Largent was 10th in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.10), and Hyslop finished 12th in both the 200 individual medley (2:13.44) and 100 fly (59.30).
In the boys meet, Granville’s Nolan Schneider finished 16th in the 500 free (5:01.67) and 18th in the 200 free (1:49.79). Schneider, Eli Winterhalter, Drew Bergstrom and Miles Baker also took 18th in the 200 free relay (1:34.86).
BOYS BASKETBALL
GCA wins opener
Three players scored in double figures as a balanced attack sent Granville Christian to a 58-55 victory against visiting Cristo Rey in the season opener.
Thad Hartshorn scored 18 points to lead the Lions. Bentley Johnson added 17 points and Zack Leija 13.
Ceesay lifts Heights
Alieu Ceesay’s game-winning 3-pointer after a Boubacar Conde steal gave Licking Heights a 69-68 season-opening victory at Olentangy.
Kaleb Russ scored 20 points, hitting three of the Hornets’ eight 3s. Ceesay added 14 points, Nate Lovinsky 12 and Bryce Cahill 9. Cahill had the assist on Ceesay’s game-winner.
Lakewood starts 1-0
Colton Ferry scored 12 of his team-high 18 points after halftime, igniting Lakewood in a 59-45 victory against visiting Horizon Science in the season opener.
Kolin Watson added 16 points, including five 3-pointers, and Troy Patterson 8 for the Lancers.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
GCA cruises
Granville Christian held visiting Cristo Rey to a single field goal in each quarter, earning a 46-12 victory in the season opener.
Ella Rhoads led the Lions with 10 points. Skyler Weekley added 9 points, Isabel Hamilton 8 and Abigail Hamilton 7.
Valley wins on road
Rylee Hillis scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half, sparking Licking Valley in a 38-32 victory at Genoa Christian.
Avery Williams added 8 points and Kinsey Osborn 7 for the Panthers (2-2).
Granville sets mark
Maddie Jones hit four of Granville’s program-record 16 3-pointers in a 70-29 victory against Fredericktown.
Harper Annarino led the Blue Aces (3-0) with 18 points. Aliyah Moore added 15 points on five 3s, Jones 12 and Hanah Rogovin 9 on three 3s.
Liberty nipped
Shelby Carr filled the stat sheet with 18 points, 10 rebounds and six steals for Liberty Christian in a 30-28 loss to Open Door.
Lily Hegenberger added 6 points for the Eagles (0-2).
BOWLING
Gabor leads Newark
Jade Gabor rolled three games over 200 to take runner-up honors and help Newark finish fourth in the Red and Blue Tournament at the Palace.
Gabor high game of 223 and 634 series led the Wildcats, who piled up a 3,408 on the day.
Makayla Adams’ series of 589 placed her fourth and also earned her all-tournament team status. Lainee Erlenbach added high games of 178 and 152, Regan Shanaberg 176 and Andy Hupp 165 for the Wildcats, who begin their Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division title defense against Lancaster at 4 p.m. Thursday at Park Lanes.
Utica edges Valley
Devin Spring’s games of 202 and 212 helped Utica slip past visiting Licking Valley, 1,722-1,701, at Redskin Lanes.
Landon Pasquale added games of 187 and 194 and Bryce Hollenback games of 186 and 179 for Utica.
Hunter Kreager’s games of 193 and 217 led Valley. Carter Bailey added games of 181 and 196 and Bryan Spray a high game of 193 for the Panthers.
HOCKEY
Generals tripped late
Miami’s goal with five seconds left sent the host Newark Generals to a 4-3 defeat in Ohio Scholastic Hockey League play.
Woody Struthers, Mason Williams and Troy Johnston each scored, and Max Vanoy and Colin Jones had an assist apiece for the Generals, who rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game at 3. Dylan McLean made 21 saves.
