Roundup: NC softball avenges loss to Lakewood, grabs LCL-Cardinal lead

NEWARK ― Avery Nagel and Veronica Bailey teamed on a three-hitter Monday against hard-hitting Lakewood and Newark Catholic took over first place in Licking County League-Cardinal Division softball with a 3-1 win against the visiting Lancers.

Bailey struck out six over the final 3⅔ innings for the Green Wave (12-5, 7-3), who avenged an earlier 13-4 loss at Lakewood. Kami Diaz and Nagel each had RBI singles in the three-run third inning and Emma Lohri had two hits.

Cora Redman slugged a solo homer for the Lancers (9-4, 5-3), while Ashlyn Carder pitched 2⅔ innings of scoreless relief.

Top-ranked Watkins stays undefeated

Visiting Watkins Memorial celebrated its ascension to the top spot in the Division I Ohio coaches poll Monday with a 10-0, six-inning LCL-Buckeye win against Licking Valley.

Jordyn Wycuff homered and singled, driving in four runs for the Warriors (17-0, 9-0), while Carsyn Cassady pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts and three walks. Cortney Dobbs doubled and singled with two RBIs, while Ava McKee doubled and singled, Kendal Tellings had two hits and Kyliee Trouten knocked in two runs, scored three times and stole four bases.

D'Neya Dennis had the only hit for the Panthers (9-6, 4-3).

Blue Aces romp

Emily Travis socked a triple, double and single with four RBIs and Megan Lodge added a triple and single with three RBIs as visiting Granville erupted for a 13-1 five-inning LCL-Buckeye victory Monday against Licking Heights.

Maia Helling chipped in with a double and single while Avary King had two singles for the Blue Aces (17-2, 7-1), ranked second in the latest Division II Ohio coaches poll. Ally Ernsberger threw a four-hitter with seven strikeouts.

Alissa West had two singles with an RBI and Lydia Rauch doubled for the Hornets (6-7, 3-5).

Spicer explodes

Kyndall Spicer slammed two home runs and a double, driving in five runs as host Heath rolled to a 14-3, five-inning LCL-Cardinal victory Monday against Northridge.

Emma Ghiloni and Kristal Keeran doubled and singled and Shelby Moore added two singles for the Bulldogs (10-7, 5-4). Kylie Green tossed a three-hitter.

Josie Van Fossen had a two-run single for the Vikings (2-11, 0-8).

Utica tops Johnnies

Emily Meyers, Kaitlin Evans and Kiersten Hull all drilled a double and two singles, with Meyers and Evans each chasing in two runs during Utica's 11-6 LCL-Cardinal win against visiting Johnstown on Monday.

Karleigh Lees smacked a homer and single with two RBIs, while winning pitcher Cheyenne Smith knocked in two runs with a double and single for the Redskins (7-7, 5-5).

Brooklynne Siegel and Peyton Mischel doubled and singled for the Johnnies (4-11, 1-6).

Newark beaten

Hayliee Roberts fired a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts Monday as host Central Crossing shut down Newark for a 5-1 Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division win.

Mallory Back doubled and Audrey Lennon singled for the Wildcats (7-9, 4-4), while Calissa Shiltz struck out eight in the circle.

Liberty falls

Audrey Soliday went 4 for 4 with a double and three singles for Liberty Christian on Monday in a 21-11 Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League loss to Shekinah Christian.

Jersey Snyder drove home five runs with a triple and double, Carolee Marcum had three RBIs, Cara Denlinger scored three runs and Alissa Windle added two singles.

BASEBALL

Dansby has no-hitter

Jaiden Dansby pitched a five-inning no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and two walks Monday as Heath blanked visiting Northridge 14-0 in the LCL-Cardinal.

Connor Corbett slugged a pair of doubles with four RBIs, Conner Toomey went 3 for 3 with three runs scored, Riley Baum had two hits and stole two bases, and Kaden Green knocked in two runs for the Bulldogs (12-1, 7-0).

The Vikings dropped to 1-16, 0-8.

Tichenor stars

Peyton Tichenor allowed only four hits in six innings to pick up the win and also drove in two runs with a pair of hits Monday as visiting Lakewood put down a late Newark Catholic rally for a 6-5 LCL-Cardinal victory.

Carson Anderson and Luke Pierce also had two hits for the Lancers (11-3, 7-2).

Tyler Johnston had a two-run double and single, and Miller Hutchison also had two hits and two RBIs for the Green Wave (6-7, 4-4), which rallied for three in the seventh before falling short. Cooper Leibas struck out six in four innings of relief.

Granville rallies

Host Granville struck for three runs in the bottom of the sixth after Licking Heights had gone up 9-8, pounding out an 11-9 LCL-Buckeye win on Monday.

Theo Talbott had three hits and Jacob Smith two, each driving in two runs for the Blue Aces (7-5, 4-3). Cash Thomas delivered a two-run single and Wilson Wells added two singles, with Caden Rosendahl picking up the win in relief.

Joel Busker and Carson Johnson each had two RBIs and Richard Hill a two-run double for the Hornets (3-11, 1-6). Maxim Fink scored three runs.

Utica victorious

Braxton Fisher tossed a six-hitter with six strikeouts Monday as Utica shut down visiting Johnstown 5-1 in the LCL-Cardinal.

Roman Gamble doubled and singled with two RBIs, Gavin Tussey also plated two runs and Chase Bennett had two singles for the Redskins (7-7, 5-4).

Landon Myers and Braeden Archibald had two hits each for the Johnnies (3-8, 1-4) and Caiden Scholl drove in the only run.

Gales stop Newark

Host Lancaster broke out to a 5-0 and held off Newark for a 5-3 Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division win Monday.

Moses Crane drove in two runs and Tyler Flint doubled for the Wildcats (9-6, 7-3) and starter Thomas Olon took the loss. Dakota Foltz pitched 2⅔ innings of scoreless relief.

Eagles edged

Visiting Shekinah Christian broke a tie with four runs in the sixth inning and staved off Liberty Christian 10-8 in the Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League.

Evan Dupler struck out eight in five innings and also knocked in two runs with a double and single for the Eagles (3-6). Dawson Kamppi had three singles and three RBIs, Mason Kamppi doubled and singled, Jackson Cecil tripled and Aiden Geiger chipped in with two singles.

BOYS TENNIS

Watkins still unbeaten

Michael Hare clinched the match with his tiebreaker win Monday, helping keep Watkins Memorial undefeated with a 4-1 win against Pickerington Central.

Liam Grennan won 6-0, 6-0 and Hare prevailed 1-6, 6-3, 7-6. Also victorious were Nathan Walter-Gavin Adelman (7-6, 2-6, 7-6) and Will Stought-Wyatt Meade (6-1, 7-6).

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Newark prevails

Miles Drake had 21 assists and four digs Monday, powering Newark past Northland 25-21, 25-18, 25-16,

Curtis Irby had seven kills, Roman Green served six aces and Te Brown chipped in with four digs for the Wildcats.

BOYS LACROSSE

Wildcats defeated

Max Frost had two goals and an assist and Drayson Peterson scored and had two assists Monday, but it wasn't enough as John Glenn scored a 10-6 win against Newark.

Luke Samples and Ricky Frazier also found the net for the Wildcats (5-6) and Austin Reed had an assist.
