Roundup: Moore powers Heath softball past Newark Catholic

Shelby Moore’s three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday lifted the Heath softball team to a 7-6 victory against visiting Newark Catholic in Licking County League-Cardinal Division play.

Megan DeVito was 3 for 3 with a run scored to lead the Bulldogs (6-3, 3-1). Kyndall Spicer and Savannah Lawson added two hits and a run apiece with Spicer also knocking in a run.

Kylie Gibson hit a two-run home run and scored three times for the Green Wave (2-4, 0-2). Maris Knowlton added a two-run double and Emma Lohri a two-run single.

Granville beats Valley

Megan Lodge homered in each of the first two innings, driving in four runs to fuel Granville in a 6-3 victory against visiting Licking Valley in LCL-Buckeye play.

Lodge also doubled, and Sophia Patena added two hits, including a triple, and a run and Emily Travis a hit, a run and an RBI for the Blue Aces (10-1, 3-0). Ally Ernsberger struck out eight and allowed two earned runs in a four-hitter.

Tori Baughman struck out five in four scoreless innings of relief for the Panthers (3-5, 1-2). Addison Justice totaled two hits, including a triple, and a run, Hailey Small a hit, a run and an RBI and Liz Korns a hit and an RBI.

Watkins wins

Jordyn Wycuff homered twice and doubled twice, racking up six RBIs in Watkins Memorial’s 17-0 victory at Johnstown in LCL play.

Cortney Dobbs also homered and doubled, scoring three runs, and Maleya Thompson added three hits, including two doubles, and three runs and Kendal Tellings two hits and two RBIs for the Warriors (8-0, 2-0). Carsyn Cassady struck out seven in three no-hit innings.

Peyton Mischel struck out four and allowed one run in 2⅓ innings of relief for the Johnnies (3-3, 1-2). Madison Holbrook singled.

Lakewood wins at Utica

Riley Williams hit two of Lakewood’s six home runs in a 17-8 victory at Utica.

Williams had five RBIs, and Cora Redman matched her with two home runs and Dani Stewart and Rachel Crist one apiece for the Lancers (6-2, 3-1). Stewart hit for the cycle, totaling four runs and two RBIs, and Becca Streets matched her with four hits, adding three runs and three RBIs, and also struck out eight.

Karleigh Lees and Kiersten Hull each homered for Utica (3-3, 2-3), combining for four runs and seven RBIs. Emily Meyers added three hits and an RBI and Hannah Shaver a hit and two runs.

Newark wins at home

Mallory Back racked up three hits, two runs and two RBIs, igniting Newark in an 11-4 victory against visiting Reynoldsburg (2-6, 1-1) in Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division play.

Audrey Lennon added two hits, a run and two RBIs, Emma Quackenbush a triple, a run and two RBIs and Amora Spring a hit, a run and two RBIs for the Wildcats (3-5, 2-0). Carissa Shilts struck out 10 in a five-hitter.

Northridge rolls

Ellie Reese doubled and singled, scored twice and drove in four runs for Northridge in a 22-5 victory at Bexley.

Gracie Smith added three hits, three runs and two RBIs, Kaitlyn Angus two hits, four runs and two RBIs, Josie VanFossen two hits, three runs and three RBIs and Ryleigh Myers a double, two runs and two RBIs for the Vikings (2-5). Smith struck out five and allowed two hits in 3⅔ innings.

Heights nips New Albany

Ava Von Bargen’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Licking Heights a 13-12 victory against visiting New Albany.

Von Bargen and Kelsey Carter had three hits apiece, combining for three runs and four RBIs with Carter hitting two doubles for the Hornets (4-3). Carter also struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief, and Lily Reich added two hits, two runs and two RBIs and Lily Meidl a home run.

Liberty falls

Carolee Marcum totaled three hits and a run for Liberty Christian in a 23-4 loss at Delaware Christian in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.

Jersey Snyder added two hits and an RBI and Lily Raymond a double, a run and an RBI for the Eagles (0-3, 0-2).

BASEBALL

Newark wins on road

Austin Rose doubled, scored and knocked in two runs for Newark in a 6-3 victory at Reynoldsburg (3-5, 2-2) in OCC-Buckeye play.

Bodie Smith added two hits and a run, Dakota Foltz a hit and two RBIs, Moses Crane a hit and a run and Blane Sturm two runs for the Wildcats (3-4, 3-1). Foltz struck out six without a walk in five innings, and Cayden Vermilion followed with two hitless innings for the save.

Lakewood outlasts Utica

Nate Gall’s fourth hit in the top of the ninth inning lifted Lakewood to a 6-5 victory at Utica in LCL-Cardinal play.

Luke Pierce added three hits and a run, Mason Sprankle two hits and two RBIs, Colton Ferry two hits, a run and an RBI and William Marrero a solo home run for the Lancers (5-1, 3-0). Pierce also struck out four in three scoreless innings of relief.

Aidyn Burgess led Utica (3-3, 1-1) with three hits, a run and an RBI, and Isaak Wogan added two hits, including a solo home run, and Roman Gamble a hit and two runs. Connor Whisner allowed three hits and one run in three innings of relief.

Watkins beats Northridge

Cole Massie had two hits, including a double, three runs and an RBI out of the leadoff spot, igniting Watkins Memorial in an 11-1 victory against visiting Northridge in LCL play.

Trent Johnson added two hits, including a double, two runs and an RBI, Noah Ciotti two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs and Cody York a double, a run and an RBI for the Warriors (5-2, 2-0). Ethan Williams struck out four in five four-hit innings.

Noah Mason doubled and scored for the Vikings (0-9, 0-3). Bridger Burcham singled and walked.

Heights wins at Zanesville

Maxim Fink and Kaleb Ribbing recorded two hits, a run and an RBI apiece for Licking Heights in a 10-6 victory at Zanesville (1-4, 0-3) in LCL-Buckeye play.

Joel Busker added a double and two runs, Grady Stephens and Carson Johnson a double, a run and an RBI apiece and Tino Martin a hit and two RBIs for the Hornets (3-2, 1-0). Johnson struck out three and allowed no earned runs in 3⅓ innings of relief.

GCA blanks Tree of Life

Bentley Johnson struck out eight in five one-hit innings, pitching Granville Christian to a 6-0 victory against visiting Tree of Life in its MOCAL opener.

Benvie struck out three in two innings to complete the shutout for the Lions (3-2, 1-0). He and Josh Benvie totaled two hits and a run apiece and Johnson added a hit, a run and an RBI and Aidan Rhoads an RBI double.

Liberty edged

Host Delaware Christian scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, sending Liberty Christian to a 9-7 defeat in MOCAL play.

Caleb Windle led the Eagles (1-2, 0-2) with three hits, a run and an RBI. Mason Kamppi added two hits and two runs and Dawson Kamppi two hits, including a double and two RBIs.

BOYS TENNIS

Watkins still perfect

Wyatt Meade and Will Stought won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles to secure Watkins Memorial a 5-0 victory against Zanesville.

Nathan Walter and Gavin Adelman also won a doubles match, 6-0, 6-2, and Liam Grennan, 6-0, 6-0, Graham Smith, 6-1, 6-1, and Michael Hare, 6-1, 6-0, won singles matches for the Warriors (6-0).

TRACK

Valley sweeps home meet

The Licking Valley girls won four of five field events, propelling the Panthers to a victory against visiting Heath, Newark Catholic and Zanesville.

Rylee HIllis won the high jump (4-feet-8), Allyson Conaway the pole vault (8-0), Emily Conaway the long jump (14-0) and Allison Osborn the shot put (27-8) for the Panthers, who totaled 94 points, well ahead of Zanesville's 57. Other Panthers winning individual events were Lily Watson in the 800 (2:51.7) and Stella Bowman in the 1,600 (6:10.6).

Winning for Heath were Kerilyn Davis in the 200 (28.9), Jaylynne Boland in the 100 hurdles (19.7) and Bradlee Higgins in the 300 hurdles (52.7). Winning for NC were Brooke Parkinson in the 400 (1:04.10) and Erin Keck in the discus (97-6.5).

In the boys meet, Quinn Hornfeck in the 200 (24.2) and 300 hurdles (42.9) and Trevor Croak in the shot put (47-4) and discus (144-11) each were double winners, leading Valley to the victory. The Panthers racked up 122 points, finishing ahead of Zanesville's 55.5.

Other individual winners for the Panthers were Marshall Carr in the 400 (52.9), Anthony Blizzard in the 1,600 (4:59.9) and Logan Debo in the 3,200 (11:02.8).

Individual winners for Heath were Brayden Bayles in the 100 (11.2) and long jump (21-4), Tucker See in the 800 (2:04.4), Tyler Hudson in the pole vault (11-0) and Jaxon Duston in the high jump (5-8).

Loevenguth leads Watkins

Scarlett Loevenguth won the 1,600 (5:41.22) and 800 (2:36.38) for the Watkins Memorial girls during a dual at Lancaster.

Also winning individual events for the Warriors were Megan Keating in the 100 (13.11) and Annie Edward in the 3,200 (13:14.94). Morgan Cumbo tied for first in the high jump (4-feet-8).

In the boys meet, Watkins individual winners were Joe McIntosh in the 100 (11.05), Adam Brazier in the 1,600 (4:52.71), Ethan Caugherty in the 400 (55.72), Pierce Lott in the 3,200 (10:35.43) and Jacob Holbert in the long jump (20-6).
