Roundup: Lakewood girls bowling takes district runner-up, state bid

Vica Pletcher rolled a high game of 206 and a three-game series of 571 on Tuesday at HP Lanes, leading the Lakewood girls bowling team to a Division II state tournament berth.

Pletcher's series was good for fourth individually in the district standings. She helped the Lancers total 3,263 to take runner-up and the final qualifying berth, three pins better than River Valley.

Lakewood qualified to state for the second time in three seasons. The Lancers compete March 2 at HP Lanes.

Amy Smith added a high game of 188 and series of 485 to place 15th, Savannah Zwayer 162 and 434 for 34th, Addison Grebb a high game of 163 and Peyton Mellring a high game of 157 for the Lancers.

Faith Westbrook's high game of 180 and series of 406 led Heath, which finished 11th. Kayleigh Goings followed with a high game of 156 and a series of 403.

In the boys tournament, Heath finished fourth in the team standings. Tyler Hudson's high game of 196 and 560 series placed him 20th, Payton Love's 204 and 547 for 22nd, Josh Dover's 235 and 541 for 23rd and Oliver Walton's 215 and 531 for 29th to lead the Bulldogs.

Landon Pasquali's high game of 198 and series of 512 placed him 33rd to lead seventh-place Utica. Bryce Hollenback added a 208 and 486 to place 39th.

Logan Hupp rolled a high game of 243 and series of 580 to place 14th and Brody White's 198 and 575 for 15th led Northridge, which finished eighth.

Owen Robinson's high game of 195 and series of 506 placed him 34th to lead Licking Valley, which finished 12th. Carter Bailey added a 178 and 481 to place 40th.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Johnstown wins tournament opener

Johnstown put eight players in the scoring column, picking up a 57-29 victory against visiting No. 14 Columbus International (12-9) to begin Division III tournament play.

Kylie Sharp totaled 15 points, seven steals and three blocks for the No. 7 Johnnies (17-6), who host No. 12 Fredericktown at 7 p.m. Friday. Lauren Baughman added 12 points, Payton Schneider 9 points and three assists and Alexis Diehl 7 points.

Northridge falls on road

Ava Travis' 11 points led Northridge in a 57-32 loss at No. 3 Amanda-Clearcreek (16-7) in a Division III first-round game.

Naia Moore added 8 points and Ruby Cermak nine rebounds for the No. 23 Vikings (6-17), who were outscored 30-6 during the middle two quarters.

BOYS BASKETBALL

NC wins in OT

Owen Helms scored 7 of his 20 points in overtime, lifting Newark Catholic to a 74-65 victory against visiting Fredericktown.

Griffin Urdarovski piled up 21 points for the Green Wave (5-17), who had a 13-4 edge in the extra four minutes after the Freddies (13-7) had rallied with an 18-9 edge in the fourth quarter. Dylan Daube added 14 of his 16 points after halftime and Jaxon Holman 8 points for NC.

Mallernee breaks mark

Carter Mallernee's three 3-pointers gave him the Northridge all-time record during a 69-53 victory at Mount Vernon (10-12).

Mallernee scored 24 points to lead the Vikings (17-5). Drew Bingham added 13 points, Ethan Payne 11 points, nine rebounds and four blocks and Jack VanFossen 8 points and four assists.

GCA wins at home

Andrew Benvie's 17 points led a balanced Granville Christian attack in a 59-50 victory against visiting Madison Christian (3-19, 2-10) to wrap up Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.

Zack Leija added 16 points and Thad Hartshorn 14 points for the Lions (7-14, 4-8), who raced out to an 18-10 lead after one quarter.

Valley cruises

A.J. Rapol's 10 first-quarter points shot Licking Valley out to a quick start in a 66-34 victory at KIPP Columbus (11-9).

Rapol hit four 3-pointers and scored 18 points to lead the Panthers (12-10), who led 23-3 after one quarter. Owen Hottinger added 12 points and Chase Vermilion and Zane Hancock 6 apiece as 12 Panthers scored.

Utica wins at home

A 24-3 blitz in the second quarter sent Utica to a 59-41 victory against visiting East Knox (3-19).

Logan Gosnell scored 9 of his game-high 19 points in the second quarter for Utica (8-13), which took a 37-14 halftime lead. Roman Gamble added 12 points, Hunter McKinney 11 and Gavin Chinn and Dylan Yates 6 apiece.

Liberty falls at home

Evan Dupler's 16 points led Liberty Christian in a 64-37 loss to visiting New Hope (12-6).

Aiden Geiger added 7 points and nine rebounds for the Eagles (6-15).

Heights drops home game

Licking Heights saw a 17-15 halftime lead disappear in a 48-32 loss to visiting Westerville South.

The Hornets (16-5) were unable to slow Kruz McClure, who scored 33 points for the Wildcats (14-7).

SWIMMING

Watkins' Harris dives at state

Brezlin Harris totaled 174.90 for Watkins Memorial in the preliminary round of the Division I diving at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

Harris finished 21st.
