ROUNDUP: Keyed by Barnes' 25 points, Woods men win at Goshen

Nov. 25—Led by 25 points from Cobie Barnes, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College downed host Goshen 91-74 in men's basketball Saturday afternoon.

A former Indiana State player, the 6-foot-7 Barnes connected on 10 of 16 attempts from the field and grabbed nine rebounds. Also contributing significantly for the Pomeroys were Chaz Birchfield with 19 points, Greg Johnson with 13 points, Shon Tupuola with 11 points and 13 rebounds and Greg Jenkins with 11 points. Junior guard Lincoln Hale from Linton added two points from off the bench.

The Woods (4-2) will play host to the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday inside Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center. Goshen's record dropped to 0-8.

Women's basketball

Illinois Wesleyan 79, Rose-Hulman 65 — At Hulbert Arena, the host Engineers got 16 points from Ashley Black and 14 apiece from Jamie Baum and C.K. Gallegos-Rodriguez, but they couldn't keep pace with the Titans in the opening game of the Midwest Challenge on Saturday afternoon.

Rose also received double-digit production from Sophia Reese with 10 points. Kate Palmer paced Illinois Wesleyan with 17 points and six assists.

In Saturday's second semifinal game of the Midwest Challenge inside Hulbert Arena, Washington University-St. Louis defeated DePauw 72-59.

Sunday's Midwest Challenge schedule will pit Rose (1-3) vs. DePauw (1-3) in the third-place game at 2 p.m. and Illinois Wesleyan (4-2) vs. Wash. U. (2-2) in the championship clash at 4.

Prep wrestling

—Braves go 6-0 — In the Vincennes Lincoln McDonald's Invitational, Terre Haute South handily defeated all six of the opponents it faced Saturday.

—Patriots compete — At Indianapolis, the Terre Haute North girls competed Saturday in the Gobbler Girls Classic.

Camryn Cheesman was 4-1 for a third-place finish for the Patriots, while Shelbie Hancock (1-3) was sixth, Kayleigh Medley (3-2) seventh and Kyleigh Pitlock-Johnson (3-2) ninth.

Last Wednesday North went 1-5 in the Mustang Invitational at Edgewood.

James Hastings and Cain Godsey were both 6-0, Ayden Muncie and Jevon Hagans both 5-1 and Cameron Baugh 4-2 for the Patriots, who beat Indian Creek but lost to Ben Davis, Owen Valley, Mt. Vernon, Edgewood and Martinsville.

Next match for the North boys is 6 p..m. Tuesday at home against South Vermillion.

—Sullivan 18th — At Indianapolis, the girls wrestling team at Sullivan placed 18th among 43 teams Saturday at the Gobbler Girls Classic.

Brylee Wilkinson placed third with a 4-1 record, while Jaylen McCammon took fourth, Rachel Ramirez (4-1) fifth, Destiny Gaines (4-1) ninth and Landrie Fifer (2-3) 10th.

Boys basketball

—Marshall 59, North Clay 55 — At Toledo, Ill., Marshall slipped past North Clay 59-55 on Saturday to finish in third place in the Cumberland Thanksgiving Tournament.

The Lions got 17 points from Payton McGuire, 13 from Bentley Delp and 10 from Kaden Matzke. Marshall (2-1) will play host to Mount Carmel on Friday.

—Riverton Parke 52, Providence Cristo Rey 32 — At Mecca, Pierson Robins had 14 points and Collett Sanders 11 as the Panthers improved to 2-0 on Saturday.

T.J. Duerson had a game-high 21 points for the visiting Wolves, now 0-2. They play Tuesday at Anderson Prep, while Riverton Parke plays the host team at Parke Heritage on Friday in the Banks of the Wabash Tournament.

—Newton 51, Casey 47 — At Toledo, Ill., the Warriors were nipped in the championship game of the Cumberland Thanksgiving Tournament.

Hayden Parcel had 15 points and four assists and Ryan Richards scored 10 for Casey.
