Roundup: Jonesville bowling defeats Vandercook Lake; WCA hoops defeats Litchfield

HILLSDALE COUNTY — With further cancellations, the prep sports scene has been slightly desolated as of late, but several events continued on as planned.

This included a showdown between Litchfield boys basketball and Will Carleton Academy, Jonesville bowling taking on Vandercook Lake and Reading hosting Bronson and Concord for wrestling duals.

Jonesville boys and girls bowling takes care of business against Vandercook Lake

The Jonesville varsity girls bowling team defeated Vandercook Lake 26-4 in a recent conference match. They stay undefeated to start their season. Leading the team was Mikayla DeBoe with a 211-234-445 series.

Haley Steveson bowled a 157-216-373 series. Harper James bowled a 130-192-322 series. Hallie James bowled a 140-151-291 series. Alaina Barrett had a one game total score of 128. Zoe Woodruff had a one-game score of 136. They also won their Bakers games with a total score of 292.

The Comet boys bowling team also defeated Vandercook Lake in a 28-2 final score tally. They earned all the Baker points with a 391 series total.

Leading the way for the Comets was Alex Pickford with a 223-222-445 series. Kyle Coley had a 217-210-427 series. Andrew Sackett won one of his two games and had a 221-199-420 series. Also winning games were Logan Church (172), Brady Lawrence (150) and Marshall Baker (191).

Reading wrestling dominates against Concord, loses to league leader Bronson

The Reading wrestling team hosted multiple Big 8 opponents for a quad meet. The Rangers prevailed in one of their two duals.

They defeated Concord 60-19 in the final points tally. The Rangers got wins from Reid Westfall (106), Dylan McCallister (113), Aiden Aemisegger (126), Domanick Magowan (132), Jeremiah Bedford (144), Gavin Wright (150), Caiden Baker (157), Connar Rudy (165), Lukas Strine (175) and Isaac Westfall (190).

Earning pinfalls for the Rangers were Aemisegger and Magowan.

The Bronson Vikings defeated Reading in 55-18 points final. The Rangers earned pinfall wins from Reid Westfall (106) and McCallister (113), and they got a void win from Carter Bell.

The Rangers will be back in action at the Napoleon Invitational this Saturday.

Litchfield drops thriller to Will Carleton Academy

After losing six straight in the month of December, the Will Carleton Academy Cougars boys basketball team has torn through the competition as of late, adding a thrilling statement win to their now four-game win streak.

After three double-digit victories in a row, the Cougars defeated the Litchfield Terriers 53-51 on Wednesday night, a stark contrast to their 65-41 loss to the Terries at the beginning of the season.

This time, the Terriers trailed the Cougars 24-21 at halftime and were unable to close the gap in the third quarter, still down 37-31. The Terriers nearly pulled off the comeback, outscoring the Cougars 19-16 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough.

Both teams were sinking 3-pointers in the final minutes of the game, but Caleb Daniels' two triples in the fourth quarter along with a triple from Tyler Slade would help the Cougars seal the win.

Terrier senior Junior Alvarez had nine points in the fourth quarter to help lead the Terrier charge, ending the day with 19 points.

The Cougars were led by Thomas Maier who had 17 points, including two triples in the first quarter.

Rounding out the top scorers of the night was Will Carleton junior Tyler Slade with 16 points, Litchfield senior Tyler Bills with 15 and Will Carleton senior Caleb Daniels with nine.

WCA improves to 5-6 on the season, and their momentum should carry them to a win over Coldwater Pansophia Academy this Friday night on the road.

After two straight tough losses, the Terriers will have an opportunity to bounce back on the road against Tekonsha, who they defeated 47-15 earlier this season. They sit at 6-5 overall, having won just one matchup since their 5-0 start to the season.

Hillsdale girls bowling defeats Adrian Madison

The Hornet varsity girls bowling team won another LCAA match, this time against Adrian Madison.

Shalee Van Heerde led the way with a 215 game and a series total score of 401. Chloe Manifold had a series total of 379 and Sage Wickham had a 300 series total.

The Hornet boys team did end up on the losing side of their matchup with Adrian Madison but had single game standouts from several bowlers. Hillsdale senior Nolan Grant had a 248 game. Alex Portteus had a 214 game. Charles Macy had a 182 game.

Wednesday night scoreboard

The Hillsdale Academy boys basketball team looked to add to their two wins after the Pat Paterson tournament with another road contest, but this time the host team got the W.

Battle Creek St. Phillip defeated Hillsdale Academy 54-40, improving to 6-5 on the season. The Colts dropped to 8-3 overall on the season. They look to rebound in their final away game of the week against North Adams-Jerome.
