Roundup: Granville’s Songrug qualifies for district boys tennis tournament

Purin Songrug won three singles matches this week for the Granville boys tennis team to punch his ticket to the Division II district tournament Wednesday at Columbus Academy.

Songrug, a sophomore, placed fourth Saturday during the sectional tournament at Academy. He previously won a pair of matches each 6-0, 6-0 before earning a 7-6, 6-4 victory against Wellington’s Hudson McConnell, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, to advance.

Grennan wins title

Liam Grennan won the championship for Watkins Memorial during the Division I sectional tournament at Pickerington Central.

Grennan, a senior, beat players from Westerville North and Big Walnut to finish 5-0 for the week and eclipse 100 wins for his career. Sophomores Nathan Walter and Graham Smith placed fourth at doubles and join Grennan in the district tournament Wednesday at Upper Arlington.

BASEBALL

Valley wins at home

Charlie Facemire was the first of five pitchers who combined on a three-hitter, leading Licking Valley to a 5-1 victory at Big Walnut.

Colby Hains, Adam West, Evan Roberts and Evan Lichtenauer followed Facemire as the Panthers allowed just an unearned run and struck out four. Hayden Rodgers and Trent Clark totaled two hits, a run and an RBI apiece, and Aidan Harrold added two hits and two RBIs.

NC beats Alder

Rocco Capretta’s two-run single highlighted a four-run fourth inning, boosting Newark Catholic to a 4-2 victory at Jonathan Alder, ranked No. 1 in Division II.

Miller Hutchison added a double and Cooper Leibas and Mikey Hess singles for the Green Wave (12-12). Leibas struck out three in three innings, and Kane Stephey struck out three in four innings of relief as each allowed three hits apiece.

Newark edged

Tyler Flint totaled three hits and a run for Newark in a 9-6 loss at Upper Arlington.

Seth Fish added two hits and an RBI. Bodie Smith had a hit and two runs. Blane Sturm and Luke Miller each recorded a hit and a run for the Wildcats (15-10).

TRACK

Jackson wins pair

Eliana Jackson was a double winner for the Granville Christian girls Friday during the Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League championships at Worthington Christian.

Jackson won the 200 (29.24) and 400 (1:04.33) for the Lions. In the boys meet, Ryder Taft won the shot put (32-feet-2).
