Roundup: Granville girls golf wins Utica Invitational
Four Granville girls golfers shot 81 or better at The Links at Echo Springs on Wednesday to lead the Blue Aces to the team championship during the Utica Invitational.
The Blue Aces shot an impressive 317, finishing 40 strokes ahead of runner-up Newark Catholic. Ainsley Laidlaw-Smith shot 77, and she was closely followed by Avery Staten’s 79, Lydia Wigal’s 80 and Olivia Jones’ 81.
Watkins Memorial’s Gracie James shot an equally impressive 68 to take medalist honors. Right behind were Lakewood’s Avery Thompson at 70 and Utica’s Olivia Dickson at 72, who shot a personal best.
Lakewood’s Lexi French shot 77, Licking Valley’s Jacqueline Gieseler 80, NC’s Caylee Lattimer 81 and Sam Spearman 87 and Utica’s Brooklyn Fender 88.
BOYS GOLF
Newark takes second
Newark totaled a solid 331 at Apple Valley to take runner-up in the first Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division meet of the season.
Mitch Bolte shot 72 to lead the Wildcats. Ty Gilbert followed at 78 and Grady Fields 85.
GIRLS TENNIS
Newark wins again
Addi Taylert rallied for a three-set victory at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, wrapping up Newark’s sweep of host Zanesville.
Vanessa Bennett, 6-2, 6-2, and Becca Helber, 6-2, 6-3, also won singles matches. Lacey Layne and Andy Hupp, 6-1, 6-0, and Maria Arnold and Dia Bailey, 6-2, 6-1, had doubles wins for the Wildcats (2-0).
Watkins rolls
Watkins Memorial lost just six games in a sweep of Logan.
Nora Grennan, 6-2, 6-0, Kaiya Minier, 6-0, 6-0, and Payton Zerkle, 6-0, 6-0, won singles matches. Claudia Schaar and Terah Severance, 6-1, 6-1, and Bella Workman and Eva Barbour, 6-1, 6-1, won doubles matches for the Warriors (2-0).
Granville beats Westland
Granville swept visiting Westland.
Abby Riley, Ela Kendrick and Grace Emery won singles matches. Teresa Collins and Sarah Williams and Sadie Landry and Hannah Bishop won doubles matches for the Blue Aces.
