Roundup: 5 Sharon swimmers to compete in D-10 championships
Feb. 27—SWIMMING
Five Sharon High student-athletes will be headed to the District 10 meet in Erie, March 5.
Senior, Gabe Kirsch (200- and 400-yard freestyle relays), senior, Jake Cattron (100 breaststroke, 200 and 400 'free relays), sophomore, Ella Labbiento (200 and 500 freestyle), freshman, Mark Cattron (100 and 200 'free and 200 and 400 'free relays), and senior Ty Chartraw (50 and 100 freestyle and 200 and 400 'free relays) will represent Sharon, coached by Bruce Tomasello and Anna Beckert.
ICE HOCKEY
— Neshannock 9, Central Valley 1 — At Brady's Run Park, Beaver Falls — Neshannock notched its 3rd win this week.
Giovanni Valentine started the scoring with an unassisted goal for the Lancers. Patrick Cionni added a goal with help from Zach Steighner. Santino Multari (Kennedy Catholic) followed with his 1st of the night with assists going to Valentine and Hunter Harris (Grove City). Logan Quigley (Mercer) closed out the 1st-period scoring on a pass from Gage Giordano.
Tommy Malvar (Kennedy Catholic) started the 2nd-period scoring with assists going to Steighner and Davey Cochenour (Kennedy Catholic). Kale McConahy tallied his 1st varsity goal unassisted to make the score 6-0 going into the break.
The host Warriors got on the board early in the 3rd period to cut Neshannock's lead to 6-1 before the Lancers tallied the next 3 goals. Multari netted his 2nd of the night on the power play, with assists going to Malvar and Harris. Cochenour scored the next 2 goals, the 1st unassisted and the 2nd on the power play with assists going to Harris — his 3rd of the night — and Colton Chamberlain.
Riley Mastowski (Kennedy Catholic) and Andrew Bovo shared the goal-tending duties for the Lancers.
Neshannock (11-2-0-2) sits atop Class B North Division of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League with a 6-point lead over Bishop Canevin, which travels to Hess ice Rink on Monday to face Neshannock at 7 p.m. The match will mark the 2nd annual Animal Charity Night benefitting ALL PAWS MATTER. Fans are urged to bring pet food and pet supplies to the game to help the local animal charity.
GIRLS HOOPS
— West Middlesex 56, Farrell 52 — At Farrell High's E.J. McCluskey Gymnasium, Coach Mike Williams' Ms. Reds (6-1, 7-3) played their first game since beating Reynolds on Feb. 8 due to COVID-19 issues and picked up the Region 1 win over the Steelers (10-4, 14-5).
It was the 7th straight win for WM, after starting the season 0-3. The win also snapped Farrell's 7-game winning streak. It was the third straight night Farrell played after rallying for big wins against Lakeview and Reynolds.
Farrell led 14-11 after 8 minutes on Friday night, but the Reds took a 31-27 into the locker room at the break. Both teams played even the rest of the way as each scored 25 points in the 2nd half.
Taylor Tomko fired in 17 points to lead WM, Carlie Beatty bucketed 13, Emma Mild scored 12, and Emily Anthony chipped in 8 points.
Sanaa Brodie rifled in a game-high 21 points for Farrell, DeMariah Burns scored 15, and Jaylie Green and Gabby King contributed 6 points each.
— Commodore Perry 37, Jamestown 22 — At Sheakleyvillle, the host Lady Panthers produced 14 third-period points to break open a tight 15-14 halftime tilt.
Grace Jones jolted Jamestown for 5 buckets from beyond the 3-point arc for a game-high 18 points, while Maddie Eber ended with another 10 for Commodore Perry (2-8, 2-8). Taylor Keener tossed in 2 treys for Jamestown (2-10, 2-12), which was playing its 3rd game in as many nights.
— Kennedy Catholic 70, Reynolds 20 — At Transfer, Region 1 champ KC moved to 12-0 in region play and 15-0 overall with the win.
Bellah DiNardo tickled the twine for 22 points, Paris Gilmore scored 18, and Hayden Keith drained 4 treys en route to 14 points.
Mackenzie Herman led Reynolds (4-7, 6-8) with 6 points and Halle Murcko and Victoria Mull contributed 4 points each.
— Lakeview 63, Conneaut Area 33 — At Stoneboro, Coach Gary Burke's Lady Sailors (12-3) snapped a 3-game losing streak with a non-region win over CASH (6-9).
Region 4 Lakeview led 17-6 after 8 minutes of play and 33-14 at the break in the win over Region 5 Conneaut Area.
Reese Gadsby rifled in 21 points for Lakeview, Amber Sefton scored 13, and Sophia DiMaria added 10 points and 7 rebounds.
Emma Stevenson had 11 points for CASH and Rylee Jones scored 7.
BOYS BASKETBALL
— Lakeview 44, Rocky Grove 43 (OT) — At Franklin, Coach Garrett Blaschak's Sailors (10-3, 10-5) picked up the Region 1 road win in overtime against the Orioles (3-12, 3-12).
Rocky Grove led 10-7 after 1 and 24-23 at the break. Lakeview was up 34-32 after 3 quarters, but was outscored 10-8 in the 4th as the Orioles forced OT. The Sailors then outscored RG 2-1 in OT.
Gavin Grantham led Lakeview with 10 points, Isaac Lightcap bucketed 9, and Hunter Miller and Cameron Pence added 7 points each.
Isaac Clayton fired in 20 points (4 treys) for Rocky Grove and Caden Toscano contributed 10 markers.
— Mercer 52, Reynolds 31 — In the county seat, the host Mustangs stampeded the Raiders in the Region 1 affair, outscoring the visitors in every quarter.
Woody Nickel notched 16 points and Logan Turton tallied 15 for Mercer (10-6, 12-8) and mentor Joe Venasco. Haydin McLaughlin mustered 7 markers, as did Ashton Small for Reynolds (5-7, 5-7).
— Sharon 82, Academy for Urban Scholars 46 — At Tiger Gymnasium, Sharon secured his 2nd win in 3 nights by registering a season-high point production. Sharon surged to 32 second-stanza points, breaking open a tight 16-15 tilt after 8 minutes.
Brayden Coxson collected a career-best 28 points — including 4 buckets from beyond the arc — for Sharon (7-12), while Otis Driver and Brett Salsgiver scored 19 and 18 points, respectively.
Academy for Urban Scholars (Youngstown) was led by George Peeples and Jemel Edwards, with 17 and 12 points, respectively.
— Erie 62, Sharpsville 34 — At Erie, the Region 6 Royals (15-3) handed the Region 4 Blue Devils (11-9) their 4th straight loss.
Erie led 15-9 at the end of the opening quarter and 36-21 at the break en route to the victory.
Marcell Banks drained 5 treys and finished with 23 points to lead Erie, Marquell Darnell scored 11, and Jamie Smith added 10 points.
James Thomas led Sharpsville with 18 points while ackson Doyle and Zak Ramsey contributed 5 points each.
Sharpsville's last 4 games have come against tough competition — Franklin, Hickory, Sharon, and Erie.

— Lowellville 58, Brookfield 37 — At Lowellville, the host Rockets defused Brookfield's season. Lowellville led 11-8 after the opening quarter and 26-14 by the break, then erupted for 32 second-half points.
Anthony Lucente led Lowellville (11-9) with a game-high 25 points, while Cole Bunofsky bucketed 15, tossing in 4 hoops from beyond the arc.
Isaiah Jones posted a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double for Brookfield (10-12), while Haden Gibson added 4 points and 5 assists and Donovan Pawlowski produced 12 points and 5 steals. Gibson and Austin Sees are the lone seniors for Brookfield bench boss Shawn Hammond.
Sixth-seeded Lowellville will meet 4th-seeded Bristol — a 56-48 winner over Lousville-St. Thomas Aquinas — Tuesday at 7 p.m.
