Rockies rally falls short: Utah fends off Jacksonville rally in men's ASUN lacrosse final

Utah fended off a furious fourth-quarter rally by Jacksonville University and won the ASUN Tournament championship game 16-13 on Sunday at the Air Force Academy’s Falcon Stadium in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Dolphins (13-5) trailed the defending conference champions 15-8 early in the fourth quarter but scored five goals in a row to cut the margin to 15-13.

Jack Taylor started the run at 10:18 left, on an assist by Anthony Caputo. Ethan Lamond scored his third goal of the game 2:06 later, with Jackson Intrieri assisting, and Marshal Maguire added a goal with Caputo assisting at 6:59.

Caputo then scored two unassisted goals, the last with 3:12 left. The Utes (12-4) blanked the Dolphins the rest of the game and added an insurance goal by Jared Andreala with 18 seconds left.

Ryan Stines, who scored the first two goals of the game, led Utah with five goals. Lamond and Intrieri had three each for the Dolphins and Caputo finished with two goals and three assists.

The Dolphins lost for the third time by three goals or less in a conference championship game, and for the fifth time overall when reaching the semifinals or a final. JU beat Robert Morris 17-12 and Air Force 15-10 to reach the title game against the Utes.
