Road to state: Wrestlers to watch for the 15-5A meet at Carroll High School

It’s arguably the most important time of year for high school wrestlers in Texas.

Since November, Corpus Christi-area grapplers have been competing in invitational and dual meets across South Texas, working to hone their skills for the next month of competition that they hope will lead them to the state meet in Cypress next month.

This week, Corpus Christi ISD wrestlers will compete in the District 15-5A wrestling meet at Carroll High School, beginning their quest for a chance to win a state medal.

Here is a look at some wrestlers to watch in this week’s meet with information from area coaches plus some key dates to know.

Boys

Riley Lopez, sr., Ray (106)

Lopez is 19-5 this season, winning the Rough Rider Invitational and Fight on the Frio earlier this season.

Isaiah Deleon, jr., King (106)

Defending district champion from 2023.

Carlos Guzman, sr., Moody (113)

Guzman is 14-7 this season and was a third-place finisher at 106 in 2023 district meet.

Luis Vela, sr., Veterans Memorial (113)

At 25-3, Vela is the returning regional runner-up and is ranked No. 8 in the state. Also defending district champion.

Aidan Rodriguez, jr., Veterans Memorial (126)

The returning district champ is 46-5 this season and ranked No. 3 in the state.

Amaziah Aguirre, Miller (144)

Aguirre qualified for regionals at 132 in 2023.

Josiah Zaragoza, jr., Moody (150)

Zaragoza is 16-7 with a victory and was fourth at 144 at last year’s district meet.

Cole Ramirez, sr., Ray (157)

Ramirez is a stellar 21-3 this season with wins at the Trojan Throwdown, Fight on the Frio and Rumble in the Jungle. Also is a three-time regional qualifier.

Jonah Stafford, Miller (157)

Stafford finished fourth in district in 2023, qualifying for the regional meet.

Nevin Roque, jr., King (157)

Roque is 18-20 this season with a fourth place finish at the Trojan Throwdown in November.

Dominic Dennis, Miller (160)

Dennis finished third at 165 in 2023 and qualified for the regional meet.

Noah Dodge, fr., Moody (165)

Dodge is 12-18 this season with two top-three finishes.

Alexander Marcotte, jr., Veterans Memorial (175)

A move-in from Florida, Marcotte is an impressive 35-6 this season, including a win at the Rumble in the Jungle in December.

Seiji Jasso, sr., King (175)

Jasso is 9-7 this season.

Roman Nino, Carroll (190)

A returning regional qualifier that has a 38-6 record this season.

Jonathon Martinez, sr., King (190)

Martinez has two pins in three matches this season.

Kaden Garcia, sr., Veterans Memorial (190)

Garcia is 33-8 this season and was third at the district meeting 2023.

Brayden Dennis, Miller (285)

Dennis is returning state qualifier that finished third at the district meet in 2023.

High School Wrestling King squads sweep team titles; top seeds hold firm at district meet

Girls

Abigail Mendoza, jr., Veterans Memorial (100)

One of the best wrestlers regardless of weight class in Texas, Mendoza is a stellar 44-3 this season and is looking to reclaim a regional championship. Currently No. 7 in Texas and No. 15 nationally.

Jo-Heather Posas, sr., Ray (107)

Posas is 15-13 this season, is a two-time regional qualifier and has runner-up finishes at the Trojan Throwdown and Charger Classic.

Trinity Duran, , sr., King (107)

Duran finished second at the 2023 district meet and is 23-16 this season.

Genevieve Bellino, Carroll (114)

A state qualifier in 2023, Belino is 35-4 this season.

Tyler Rokosz, sr., Veterans Memorial (114)

Currently ranked No. 18 in Texas, Rokosz is 28-14 and is looking for a return to the state meet.

Leah Cisneros, Carroll (120)

The reigning girls state champion at 120, Cisneros is 33-2 this season with at least six gold medals at tournaments.

Xandrea Garza-Hurtado, Miller (120)

Garza-Hurtado is looking for a return to the state meet in 2024.

Rylee Fox, sr., Ray (126)

Fox is 16-7 this season with a victory at the Fight on the Frio.

Audree Alvarado, jr., Moody (138)

Alvarado is 14-10 this season with three top-three finishes in invitational meets.

Alyssa Reyes, so., Veterans Memorial (138)

Reyes is ranked No. 4 in the state at 138 and was fourth at the state meet in 2023 and is 30-4 heading into this week’s district meet.

Amaris Villarreal, jr., Moody (145)

Villarreal is 16-8 this season and was second in the district meet in 2023.

Gabriela Garcia, so., King (145)

Garcia holds a 27-12 mark and has three victories this season, including at the Trojan Throwdown at Rumble in the Jungle.

Ivanna Reyes, jr., Ray (152)

Reyes is 13-7 this season and earned second place finishes at the Charger Classic and the Top Gun Invitational.

Savannah Deleon, Miller (152)

Deleon earned a spot as a regional qualifier alternate in 2023.

Savannah Cerda, Carroll (165)

Cerda is 33-7 this season.

Jena Reyes, jr., Ray (165)

Reyes sports a 20-9 record and has a win at the Fight at the Frio earlier this season. A three-time regional qualifier.

Katelynn Galvan, so., King (185)

Galvan will be looking for her first district championship this season.

Layla Chapa, jr., Moody (235)

Chapa has six victories this season and has a 23-2 record.
