Road closures, parking for 2024 Detroit Grand Prix: What to know

The city of Detroit has announced its plans for road closures leading up to this weekend's Grand Prix event The three-day event will be in downtown from Friday, May 31, until Sunday, June 2.

Road closures are set to begin Tuesday, May 28, and go through June 5, according to a news release. Other forms of transportation, including the QLINE, People Mover, SMART, and DDOT buses, will still be available to the public during the closures.

Here's how to plan and get around the road closures.

Road closure schedule

Here are the road closures that are set to take place: from May 28-June 5.

  • Atwater Street from Riopelle Street to Hart Plaza

  • Bates Street from Jefferson Avenue to Atwater Street

  • Eastbound Jefferson from M-10 to Rivard Street

  • Westbound Jefferson from Rivard Street to Washington Boulevard

  • Woodward Avenue from State to Jefferson Avenue

  • Cadillac Square west of Bates Street

  • Campus Martius

An overlap of closures happening May 29-June 3

  • Renaissance Drive West

  • Franklin Street between Rivard Street and St. Antoine Street

  • Rivard Street between Jefferson Avenue and Atwater Street

  • Antoine Street between Jefferson Ave and Atwater Street

Larned Street and Congress Street will remain open during the closures. All remaining road closures, the city said, are expected to reopen by Friday, June 7.

What about parking?

There will be enforced parking restrictions during the closures and the Grand Prix event. The Ford Underground Garage will be unavailable to the public and city employees beginning May 28 and that will last until June 7. During the event weekend, the following garages will not be available to the public.

  • Millender Garage, 331 Larned St.

  • Center Garage, 414 Renaissance Drive West

  • Port Atwater Garage, 200 Beaubien Blvd.

  • Beaubien Garage, 238 Beaubien Blvd.

  • River East Garage, 214 Rivard St.

The Park Detroit App is available for download to receive information on parking throughout the city.

How to get around downtown

Multiple options of transportation will still be available to the public and residents to get around downtown.

According to the news release, the QLINE will offer a $5 park-and-ride system at lot 12 at the Wayne State campus (6005 Woodward Ave.) during the weekend. The QLINE is free to those just needing a ride on the shuttle.

The People Mover will also be available to the public and have extended hours. Fans will want to get off at the Renaissance Center station to arrive directly at the footprint of the the Grand Prix. There's no cost to ride the People Mover.

Ride-share options (Lyft, Uber, etc.) will also be available to those during the weekend. There will be three drop-off locations available. The west location will run along Fort Street between Washington Boulevard and Shelby Street. The east location will located on Riopelle Street, between Jefferson Avenue and Woodbridge Street. The north location will be at Checker Bar, 124 Cadillac Square.
