Rex Ryan — yes, that Rex Ryan — is competing on the new season of 'The Amazing Race'

Rex Ryan is one of the contestants on the soon-to-premier 34th season of "The Amazing Race," CBS announced on Wednesday.

And before you ask, yes, it's THAT Rex Ryan. The former head coach of the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills, and current "NFL Sunday Countdown" analyst. If you still don't remember him, this should help: he's the football coach who likes feet. His race partner is Tim Mann, a probation officer and one of his golfing buddies.

Along with "Survivor," "The Amazing Race" is one of the foundational shows of modern reality TV. Premiering in 2001 (just six days before 9/11), it's a reality competition show based on international travel, with 11 or 12 two-person teams each solving clues and doing challenges that take them to various destinations all around the world. The last team to check in at that episode's pit stop is eliminated. The first team to check in to the final destination of the journey wins $1 million.

That sounds fun, but of course it's a race. Teams battle it out for cabs, buses, and other forms of transportation in pretty much every episode. They look for ways to get an edge on even one team by rushing to make trains and asking locals for help with translation or for info on little-known shortcuts. And everything can change once you get to a challenge, which could be anything from unrolling bales of hay to eating unfamiliar meats or even shaving your head.

Filming finished earlier this year, so Ryan will be back with ESPN this football season on "NFL Sunday Countdown." We won't know how long he and Mann lasted on the show — it's possible they could have won the $1 million prize — but it'll definitely be interesting to see how he deals with the wacky challenges and the stress of travel in unfamiliar places where English isn't widely spoken.

Season 34 of "The Amazing Race" premiers on Sept. 21 at 10 pm ET on CBS.
