Report: Saints trying to trade for Cowboys’ lineman
The New Orleans Saints already own one of the NFL’s best offensive lines, thanks to the efforts of Max Unger and Terron Armstead. However, it appears as though they’re looking to add more beef to protect Drew Brees.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the team has been heavily after Dallas Cowboys’ Ronald Leary for some time:
While we wait for a potential #Cowboys QB trade, keep an eye on OL Ronald Leary. #Saints have pursued him to no avail over past few months
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) August 4, 2016
The 27-year-old Leary joined the Cowboys in 2012 as an undrafted free agent. Back in May, Leary requested a trade. Per NFL.com’s Chris Wesseling, Leary lost his starting role to La’el Collins during the 2015 season, and never got a starting job back.
For what it’s worth, Pro Football Focus ranked the Cowboys offensive line as the NFL’s best from last season, and the Saints came in at third. You can see Dallas clearly has no need for him, since their o-line produced incredibly well all season.
Do the Saints need him? Not so much. They’ve kept their offensive line in tact for 2016 and there’s no reason to suggest it’ll have a significant decline.
But if Leary requested a trade, chances are Dallas will be happy to honor that deal, and the Saints may only be looking at surrendering a late-round pick. Perhaps it will be worth adding depth when it’s available.
