Report: Mark Ingram II plans to change jersey numbers again in 2022

This saga is nearly at its close. Mark Ingram II has changed jersey numbers often throughout his time with the New Orleans Saints — first wearing No. 28 upon being drafted by them out of Alabama way back in 2011, then later changing to No. 22. He had to select a new jersey upon returning to New Orleans in a midseason trade last year, opting for No. 14 (the inverse of his good friend Alvin Kamara’s No. 41 jersey, see).

Then he switched to the single-digit No. 5 on the eve of Saints training camp. It’s been a rollercoaster ride for Ingram, who also wore Nos. 21 (with the Baltimore Ravens) and 2 (for the Houston Texans) in his time away from the Saints.

And now Nola.com’s Rod Walker reports that Ingram is planning to go back to No. 22, following last week’s surprise trade of C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Ingram has used that jersey number in more games than any other (86 contests, including the playoffs), so it makes sense for him to go back to his most enduring look.

Hopefully it helps him to continue running hard behind Kamara in the Saints’ running backs rotation. If Ingram can recapture some of the stubborn, violent play-making ability that defined his peak years in New Orleans, the team will be much better for it.
