Report: Jags looked into a sign-and-trade deal to send Jadeveon Clowney to Ravens

This past weekend, a report surfaced about the Jacksonville Jaguars monitoring free-agent pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney, but according to a new report, it wasn’t to have him take the field in black and teal. Instead, the Jags were planning to pull off a sign-and-trade with the Baltimore Ravens, but the league would not authorize it .

In a nutshell, a sign and trade between the Jags and Ravens would’ve allowed Baltimore to remain under the cap while acquiring the veteran pass-rusher. With just a projected amount of over $11.2 million available in cap space, the Ravens couldn’t afford Clowney and wanted the Jags to absorb some of this salary (likely the signing bonus of $5 million) in exchange for draft compensation. The Jags, on the other hand, could’ve easily done that with a projected amount of $26.6 million in available cap space, per Over the Cap.

This contradicts the assumptions from Sunday that Clowney would’ve ended up with the New Orleans Saints through a sign-and-trade with the Cleveland Browns.

It makes sense that the Jags would’ve done business with the Ravens because they have in the past (most recently for Calais Campbell) and it seems as though both front offices have a good relationship. It certainly would’ve been interesting to see the Jags pull off such a move as they’ve been stockpiling picks for the draft that just past in April and next year’s.
