Report: Dillon Brooks’ new Rockets contract includes bonuses, incentives

The recently signed four-year, $80-million contract between the Houston Rockets and Dillon Brooks is believed to include bonuses and incentives, reports Kelly Iko of The Athletic.

The terms and amounts of those bonuses and incentives are not yet clear, but it could potentially make the contract much more palatable and team-friendly than what it initially appeared to be. There are no player or team options on the deal, Iko previously reported.

It’s the latest example in a trend of contracts awarded under Rockets general manager Rafael Stone that were initially presented in media reports as much more player-friendly than they actually are.

Friday’s agreement between the Rockets and Fred VanVleet was first reported as a three-year, $130-million deal before news emerged later that the third year was a team option, effectively making it a two-year deal in terms of guaranteed money.

Similarly, in 2022, contract extensions reached with Kevin Porter Jr. and Jae’Sean Tate were initially reported with the maximum potential earnings from each deal. Then, in subsequent days, news of the various bonus, incentive, and option structures were disclosed.

Time will tell as to the significance of those with Brooks.
