Report: Cowboys RB Marion Barber’s cause of death ruled heat stroke

The Dallas Cowboys’ community has suffered several tragedies over the last few months. Perhaps none hit the most recent iterations of the roster harder than the loss of running back Marion Barber. The 2005 fourth-round pick was found dead in his apartment during a welfare check. Now, the cause of death has been released; accidental heat stroke.

From USA Today’s Todd Schad:

The Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled that former Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber III died of heat stroke, according to a copy of the autopsy report obtained by USA TODAY Sports on Monday.

His death was ruled an accident.

Apparently Barber liked to workout in sauna-like conditions, and he had set his thermostat to 91 degrees with the heat on, and had turned on the bathtub faucets. The apartment was locked and he had not been heard from for six days, prompting the welfare check.

Barber spent six of his seven seasons with the Cowboys and totaled over 6,100 yards and just shy of 60 career touchdowns. He was 38 years old.
