The regular season has concluded; See how Topeka-area football teams finished the year

Washburn Rural 44, Topeka West 8

The Junior Blues took it to the Chargers on Thursday, Oct. 20. Washburn Rural finished the season undefeated for the first time since 1993. Turnovers doomed Topeka West early as quarterback Branton DeWeese looked comfortable rushing and passing the ball. Topeka West earned a consolation touchdown in the second quarter as Kenton Tisdale found Trey Barr for the 54-yard touchdown.

Hays 62, Topeka High 33

It was a tough evening for the Trojans as they traveled to the western side of the state for their regular season finale. They couldn’t hold off Hays, but they still created a ton of highlights. Most notably, Courtney Sanders’ 87-yard kick return for a touchdown. Sanders threw down at least three juke moves as he evaded every player on Hays’ special teams for the touchdown. Tevane Ewing also added a 62-yard rushing touchdown.

Seaman 28, Piper 21

The Vikings came from behind in outstanding fashion over the Pirates in week 8. Seaman trailed by one point leading into the final minutes and quarterback Max Huston was dialed in. He completed pass after pass which led to a game-winning touchdown to Bryer Finley. Huston threw for 362 yards and four touchdowns. Finley caught 12 passes for 129 yards and three touchdowns. Callen Barta, who flipped his college commitment from Nebraska to Kansas State over the weekend, caught nine passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. The Vikings’ defense also forced six turnovers in the win.

Shawnee Heights 47, Leavenworth 7

The Thunderbirds secured their third win in a row against Leavenworth. Shawnee Heights left no doubt who the better team was in the game as running back Allen Baughman led the way. Baughman rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Quarterback Ryeki Tuley threw for 242 yards and finished with three touchdowns and an interception. Jayden Moore, Jacob Malcom, Jayden Holly and Tyren Parker all caught a receiving touchdown. Backup quarterback Aiden Scott also tossed a touchdown in the win.

Washington 28, Highland Park 20

Highland Park opened the game with an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but Washington fired back in the second quarter. The Wildcats put up 16 points in the second quarter to take the lead at the break. In the second half, it was Washington that finished strong as it scored the game winning touchdown in the fourth quarter. Washington’s fourth quarter touchdown were the only points of the quarter. Highland Park’s biggest highlight of the game was a 75-yard touchdown reception from CJ Brown, who stiff armed and juked his way down the sideline for the long touchdown.

Hayden 56, Hiawatha 7

The Wildcats dominated the Red Hawks as Hayden scored 49 first half points to set the tone. Hayden accumulated 490 yards of offense in the win. Kade Mitchell opened the scoring for Hayden on a 30-yard rushing touchdown. Jett Wahlmeier threw the second touchdown of the game to Jensen Schrickel. The wide receiver leaped over the defender and caught the pass after Hiawatha tipped it for the 29-yard touchdown. Hayden is one of three teams in Class 3A that remain undefeated heading into the playoffs.

Silver Lake 72, Atchison County 0

Silver Lake cruised to another easy win in week 8. It is the Eagles’ sixth straight win. One of the best plays was quarterback Tanner Martin finding Dayne Johnson on an out route as the halftime horn blew. Johnson turned after he caught the pass and flipped it over to Brody Kelly, who sprinted towards the end zone for the touchdown. The Eagles have outscored their opponents 186-6 over the final three weeks of the season.

Rossville 64, Maur Hill-Mount Academy 0

Rossville came to play early against Maur Hill-Mount Academy. The Bulldogs forced three turnovers and six different Rossville players found the end zone. Tayson Horak rushed for one touchdown and caught two touchdowns passes to lead the Bulldogs. He rushed for 52 yards and caught three passes for 52 yards. Rossville has won three straight games entering the first round of the playoffs.

Cair Paravel 74, Maranatha Christian Academy 28

It was another big victory for Cair Paravel in week 8. The Lions dominated Maranatha in all facets of the game. Quarterback Jase Pavlik continues to be a huge threat in 8-man football this season. Against Maranatha, he threw for 86 yards on 9-for-14 passing and five touchdowns. Pavlik used his rushing ability to score another touchdown as he accumulated 95 yards on the ground. The Lions have won four straight games as they begin their playoff schedule next.
