Region I-4A track: Estacado freshman trio teams with 'unc' to chase down state berth

When looking at the composition of the Estacado boys 800-meter relay team, it's understandable Cedric Ross felt the way he did at the Region I-4A meet.

"We're not even supposed to be here," Ross said.

With freshmen occupying three spots, perhaps he's right. But that didn't stop the Matadors from earning a state berth — and doing so in dramatic fashion.

James Bozeman, part of that trio of newcomers, anchored Estacado to a come-from-behind silver medal in 1 minute, 29.05 seconds Saturday at Lowrey Field. Bozeman made up ground after taking the baton in fourth place.

Ross, Bozeman and Donivan Torrez make up the freshmen who run with junior Delton Johnson, an elder statesman for the group. The young ones affectionately refer to Johnson as "Uncle Delton," or "unc" for short.

While just a nickname, Johnson resembled a proud family member as he beamed with his arm around the hero Bozeman post-race.

"He brought us home, man," Bozeman said, before turning to the Mats' anchor. "We're going to state because of you, man. Let's go."

The group has come together in short order. Saturday marked Estacado's third meet with the same four legs, and they've improved each of the past three weeks.

Maybe it helped giving Bozeman a chance to chase down competition.

"If I see people in front of me," he said, "I just got to go get 'em."

All four members said they're proud to represent Estacado at the Class 4A meet May 11 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. It took work to earn that spot, and they're treating the leadup to state with a "no days off" mentality.

"I've got a bunch of freshmen on my team, man," Johnson said. "We're working. East side got some speed on us."

Snyder's Castillo making return trip to state

Even having experienced it before, Jay Castillo isn't taking anything for granted.

The Snyder junior secured his return trip to the state meet with a win in the 400 in 48.13 seconds. Castillo placed seventh at state last season.

"Every year it's a blessing," he said. "I just want to thank the Lord for giving me the ability and the strength to make it as far as I did. I know a lot of people don't get this experience."

Castillo finished in front of Dumas' Oliver Ortiz, whom he competed with at state. Ortiz, who ran a 48.34 on Saturday, got the better of his Snyder competition with a fifth-place finish in Austin.

Castillo said it's a fun challenge matching up with the Demons' senior. The two won their respective preliminary heats Friday, with Castillo emerging as the top qualifying time.

"I always feel pressure in any kind of race," Castillo said, "especially having a really talented kid like Oliver from Dumas coming in running 47 (seconds). It's a good nerve."

Castillo expects his nerves at Myers Stadium to be less of an issue. He hopes the past experience at Myers Stadium will help him land on the podium.

"You have to learn to control yourself, be more calm," Castillo said, "and to always stay loose."
