Referee shoves parent during Hazel Park high school basketball game

A Michigan high school game ended early last week after a brawl broke out. But the fight at the Hazel Park vs. North Farmingham game didn’t involve players, it was between a parent and a referee.

In WXYZ-TV Detroit’s video footage of the incident, it appears that a female fan threw a bottle onto the court with about a minute left, which ended the game. Fans were frustrated with the referees’ decision to stop playing and one parent spoke out. Referees and players were huddled by the sidelines when words were exchanged between the ref and the parent.

“It appears that the referee unfortunately pushed (the parent) and then left the court,” Dr. Amy Kruppe, the Hazel Park superintendent said in the video.

After the incident, students and fans jumped off the bleachers and rushed to the court.

The Hazel Park Athletic Director had also been ejected earlier in the third quarter.
