Redskins Ring of Fame – Gary Clark
“It is not the size of the dog in the fight, but it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” Gary Clark was only 5’8” or 5’9″ in height and about 175 – 180 pounds, but he was one tough wide receiver.
Gary Clark played for the Washington Redskins from 1985 to 1992. This exciting wide receiver was part of the legendary “Posse” which included Clark, Ricky Sanders and Art Monk. These three receivers are the only three NFL receivers to receive over 1,000 yards – each on the same team.
I remember that 1989 team and they just missed going all the way to the Super Bowl by one game. The 1989 Washington Redskins ended the season with a record of 10 and 6. However, I felt that team with “The Posse” would win a Super Bowl. They did in 1991 going 14 and 2 and dominating the Buffalo Bills in the Super Bowl.
Gary Clark was a Super Bowl champion twice, Pro Bowler 4 times, 70 Greatest Redskins, 80 Greatest Redskins, Ring of Fame and should be in the NFL Hall of Fame. Today’s receivers get praise if they catch 6 touchdowns in a season. Gary Clark caught 9 touchdowns in 1989 for 1,229 yards. In 1991 Clark caught 10 touchdowns and 1,340 yards. He is in the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
Gary Clark was a “complete receiver” in that he would catch tough passes over the middle when many receivers would get “alligator arms” because they expected to get hit hard when they touched the ball. He also had the speed and was a deep threat. Finally, he was a good blocker and a team player.
Gary Clark made us Washington Redskins fans proud. He had 27 games with over 100 yards receiving. Be sure to read and comment on my follow-up article making the case for Clark to be inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
