Reds sign Cincinnati native Josh Harrison to a minor league deal

The Cincinnati Reds signed veteran infielder Josh Harrison to a minor league contract on Monday, adding a Cincinnati native to provide more infield depth in the organization.

Harrison, who played at Princeton High School and the University of Cincinnati, is a 13-year big league veteran who was named an All-Star in 2014 and 2017. He has spent the last few seasons as a utility player, and Harrison was a solid bench piece on three different teams between 2020 and 2022.

Last year, Harrison signed a one-year deal for $2 million with the Philadelphia Phillies. He only played in 40 games and hit .204 before the Phillies released him.

Harrison could help shore up an area of the depth chart that the Reds’ front office has been looking to improve all offseason. The Reds lost most of their minor league infield depth from last year. Harrison joins veteran infielders Mark Mathias, Hernán Pérez and Erik González as experienced infielders on minor league deals with the Reds. Prospects Tyler Callihan, Austin Callahan and Alex McGarry are also a part of the Reds’ infield depth in the upper levels of the minor leagues.

Last year, Matt Reynolds, Alejo Lopez, Jason Vosler and Nick Solak were among the players who were in these roles entering spring training.

Harrison was inducted into the Bearcats Hall of Fame in 2015. With the University of Cincinnati, he was the 2008 Big East Co-Player of the Year and was named a second team All-American.

Harrison, 36 years old, is the younger brother of Dayton Dragons manager Vince Harrison.
