Red River graduate Shelby Frank earns first-team All-American honors at NCAA National Championships

Jun. 12—EUGENE, Ore. — Discus throwers battled through rainy conditions Saturday at Hayward Field.

But the conditions didn't stop Grand Forks Red River graduate Shelby Frank from earning first-team All-American honors at the 2022 NCAA National Championships.

Frank threw the discus 180 feet (54.87 meters) to finish sixth place in the meet.

Frank reached the final with a second attempt of 177-9. She jumped from eighth to sixth with her final attempt.

The winner was Arizona State senior Jorinde Van Klinken, who threw 203-11. She was followed by Kansas senior Alexandra Emilianov (191-9), Texas Tech junior Malin Smith (186-3), Oklahoma senior Lauren Jones (181-11) and Texas Tech senior Seasons Usual (181-7).

Frank was the only underclassman to finish in the top eight.

This marks the second time Frank has earned All-American honors in the discus. Last year, as a freshman, she was a second-team All-American.

The meet capped an outstanding sophomore season for Frank.

In April, she set the University of Minnesota school record in the discus with a 190-3 throw in Baton Rouge, La.

Frank was the only Gopher women's track and field athlete to earn first-team All-American honors this season.

In high school, Frank won four consecutive North Dakota state discus titles as an eighth-grader, freshman, sophomore and junior. The state meet was wiped out her senior year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

She also won back-to-back shot put titles as a sophomore and junior.
